AI War Beta 5.064-5.067 "Abilities Unlocked" Released!
« on: August 18, 2012, 04:40:22 pm »
(Crossposted from this blog post)

This one adds two more bonus ship types for the Ancient Shadows expansion: the Neinzul Scapegoat and the Spire Railcluster.  The Scapegoat has a one-shot version of the Regenerator Golem's ability (only works on fleet ships) and I expect to hear tales of absurd exploits and thus have to nerf it, but have fun figuring them out ;)  The Railcluster isn't as unique as the Scapegoat or the others added thus far for AS (the medic frigate and the tackle drone launcher) but in another way it is unique: it's the first "Spire fleet ship" that's purely oriented towards straight-up combat.  It shreds little stuff particularly.

If you play versus the new "Heroic" AI Type, expect to see some now-familiar toys getting thrown back in your face.  The AI's champions are much simpler than human ones (no nebula travel, XP gain, etc) but they come with nasty modules (from a randomly picked template, for variety) and should spice things up a bit.

Speaking of champions, I'd meant to have another scenario ready for this release but other champion-related issues took priority.  Specifically:

The interface for managing the modules has been pretty schizophrenic with both the normal build-queue method and the specialized "ship design window" method because the champion's situation is so unique.  So now it just directs you to the ship-design-window method for champions, with a settings toggle for getting the old build-queue method back if you really want it.  Feedback on this would be quite welcome.

Further, the interface for spending unlock points was... unwieldy.  So now the ship design tab doesn't try to do any of that, and that function is now performed by the "Champion Unlocks" tab of the same window.  Personally I think it looks pretty nice, but it is still a user interface designed by an engineer, so your mileage may vary ;)

Finally, another tab has been added to the normal HUD you see when you have a champion selected: in addition to the "MODS" tab (which used to hold the build queue stuff and now is just a shortcut to ship-design) you now have an "ABILITY" tab.  You'll only see one ability there right now (a neinzul champion gets a different one) but the idea is that they spend a newly-added champion resource: Shadow charge.  It was part of the original design but I'd gone back and forth on whether it really made sense to have directly-triggered abilities in this game.  Since then player feedback has made it clear that it really would help make the champions feel more interesting to use, so here we go.

Oh, and there's several bugfixes and balance changes, but you probably already guessed that from previous releases :)

Update: 5.065 hotfix is out to fix a bug where Shadow Charge was accumulating without cap, and a few nasty UI bugs with the ship-design tab.  Also revised the bomber-drone balance change.

Update: 5.066 hotfix is out to fix a UI bug when trying to open another player's champion in ship-design.  Would generally only come up in singleplyer games with multiple champions, but it's pretty annoying in that case.

Update: 5.067 hotfix is out to fix a bug where nebulae past the third or fourth were not generating scenarios, and a few other bugfix/balance changes.

Enjoy!

This is a standard update that you can download through the  in-game updater itself, if you already have 4.000 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found  if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 4.000 or later, you can download that here.

Wow, infinite shadow energy, I like.

Gotten up to 4,500/1,000 shadow energy, I made a line of force fields for my fleet, 2 minutes under fire in a Mk III system, I took no damage.

I assume it's supposed to cap at 1,000 but it just keeps collecting at the moment.

As I'm currently playing and using it, the highest I've seen is that 4,500 but I'm pretty sure it could go higher.

D.

Yea, Cinth reported that a few minutes ago and it's been fixed for the next version :)  I'm tracking down another issue but once that's done I'll get the hotfix out assuming no other critical reports between now and then.

Can I go and say I don't like the bomber drone change (parts of it)?
The overall ranges feel good, but the TTL change has really cut down on the number of drones you can have out.

Looks like each module can get out 6 drones now. Thats a considerable drop in firepower (and usefulness).

Combined with the buff to encounter scaling, the drones aren't able to hold any lines.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Mathematically, how?  Each drone gets the same number of shots off if it spawns in range of a target, and actually has a much better chance to get 6 shots in, instead of 5.

The time to live change. The number of drones that would have spawned in the 10 seconds that were chopped off. I primarily used drones in encounters to stall out enemy pushes, and let the allied forces gather up into a little fleet ball.

Used like that I could set up a defensive line that held off the enemy and let the allied ships do damage to the enemy facilities. As it is now, the drones are getting run over pretty hard.

Yes, but how does that reduce their firepower?  Their reload rate was reduced from 5 to 3, so they fire 6 times in 20 seconds.  They used to fire 6 times in 30 seconds, and I imagine frequently lost the last shot due to them not always instantly getting a shot off upon spawning.

So firepower isn't the right word to use then. The reduction of their numbers is where I'm hurt the most.

So the value of having extra targets to distract the enemy?  I'm not entirely sure it's smart of the enemy to shoot at them with permanent ships in range anyway :)

I want to say that previously you could get ~10 drones out per module. Now it's 6. 4 drones carry a lot of firepower. The enemy ships targeting drones is something else entirely though lol.

Ships like the Intimidator one shot Mk IV drones 16 at a time. I want to say those extra numbers help carry the drones.

Edit: Thought the speed change wasn't going to effect normal? 80 speed prior (40 in nebula) now 70 ( 35 nebula)

Yes, but as I said earlier you're getting the same (or more) number of bomber-drone shots out in, say, a minute.

That's a good point.

Just put this in for the next version, which I'm going to push out shortly because of the infinite-charge issue and a couple UI things, unless something else critical shows up in my next scan.

Quote
* Bomber Drones:
** Seconds-per-salvo back from 3 => 5.
** Seconds it takes a bay module to produce one from 3 => 2.
** Time to live from 20 => 21.
*** Just to make it less likely that they'll lose the last shot because of not instantly targeting.
** In short, this should maintain the same total shots produced over a given minute, but with more drones in the air at any given time.

Actually, if I did my math correctly, the number of drones you can have out drops, but the total DPS seems to have gotten about a 45% boost? (Assuming target starts within attack range).
In 20 seconds, the new drones should have gotten off 35 total shots.  The old drones (time 20) only 29.
In 30 seconds, the new drones should have fired 77 shots.  The old drones, 58 shots.
Of course, the lifespan change severely gimped the range at which you can attack things, and the shooting speed change means getting in close in FAR more important, with associated risk to the Champion.

So firepower isn't the right word to use then. The reduction of their numbers is where I'm hurt the most.
So the value of having extra targets to distract the enemy?  I'm not entirely sure it's smart of the enemy to shoot at them with permanent ships in range anyway :)
The AI's targetting is highly influenced by the drones.  As an extreme example:
The Cookie Monster likes drones.  I've managed to preserve portions of my fleet my having the drones spawn on top of Mr Muncher, so he'll target them first instead of other (more valuable) targets.  So, yes, the reduction in the total number of drones that can be living is a (minor) nerf.

Ships like the Intimidator one shot Mk IV drones 16 at a time. I want to say those extra numbers help carry the drones.
I think there's a better fix for this.  A slight buff to the drone's health, so that while low marks could be one shot killed, high marks could survive *a* shot (if the attrition hasn't run too far).
Right now, though, Intimidators completely shut down Bomber-heavy Champions.

If I really want to kill the enemy ships, I will X move my champs through there fleet ball. I use drones like a form of CC. Their numbers made that possible, and the champs get plenty of ways to actually do damage. To me it is fun to be able to find a way to control the pace and shape of these encounters. This iteration of the BDs really killed it.

Did you catch my edit about the speed change for the drones?
