Update: 5.056 hotfix is out to add a "Normal+Champion" role because the previous model of requiring "1 Normal Player + 1 Champion Player" for using champions in a singleplayer was... really, really bad.  I should never have expected that to fly, sorry ;)  The old champion-only role is still available because it does have uses (more than one champion in singleplayer, and champion-only players in multiplayer) but its tooltips and related text have been changed to make it a lot clearer that you should use Normal+Champion if you're trying to use champions in singleplayer.  5.056 also has a bugfix and a few key UI-clarity improvements related to building and upgrading champion modules.  Thanks for the ongoing beta feedback!

I'll start working on the other individual features more when this champions stuff settles out a bit more, want to make sure it's at least in a sane state :)

If warheads can't solve it, use more warheads.

That was posible before, and I believe it still is. :)
7 champions was the most you could do before (1 normal + 7 champion-only), but now you can get 8 by doing 1 normal+champion + (any mix of 7 normal+champion + champion-only) :)

Using champion+normal on multiplanet starts gives you one champion per start planet.

The fort has the same power as a MkI fort, a mkIII mod-fort laser battery has about 0.375 the power of a mkI fort (so 8 of them = 3 MkI forts), and a mkIII mod-fort Heavy-Beam battery has about 0.75 the power of a mkI fort (so 4 of them = 3 MkI forts, but shields displace these).

So if you're using 8 MkIII laser batteries and 4 shields the firepower will be about 4/5ths that of 5 MkI forts but it will be substantially more durable.

Ok, to clarify.

Maybe I should re read the release notes, but I thought an basic Modular fort should be close to a cap of regular forts, while a modular fort with III modules should exceed a regular fort. Maybe I read it wrong.

For a fallen spire game, modular forts maybe are a good deal. But for any other game, they just are not. Get regular forts instead. Yes, the cost more, but are much more flexible and allow further upgrades in the research tree.*

*Unless you naturally get either MK III beam cannons or shields (maybe) AND III lasers / missiles (maybe)


*** I say this because the nature of defenses has always been "flimsy glass cannons" which modular forts seem the first exception to. Except, with the natureof AI war, for defense you want greater offense, to prevent the popping of your command station.

Also keep in mind regular forts have vastly, vastly greater range then any of the modules.
