This one is a major upgrade to the game's visual fidelity (one of the big pieces of free content in 6.0 that's for everyone, not just those getting the Ancient Shadows expansion).  There's also another hotfix to try to deal with the performance problems some people have been seeing since 5.042.

This is a standard update that you can download through the  in-game updater itself, if you already have 4.000 or later. When you  launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found  if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 4.000 or later, you can download that here.

Anyways, after a 5 second test, I am seeing none of the performance issues other people are reporting over the recent patches.

I'm on a Radeon 5780 since GPU make seems to be in the spotlight.

Have you tried anything that involves a metric ton of lines being drawn on the screen? A lot of munitions boosting (fleet starships and such will do), a ton of tractoring, holding shift while moving a thousand or so ships around, etc.

Well I just updated. I didn't actually go into a game but I did load it up and saw the menu screen. The new looks are awesome!

Is there a way we could have a lower saturation toggle or slider? The bright, high contrast colors and higher detail has kind of tipped the scales toward distracting for me.

Otherwise, really enjoying the visual variety.

(whish there was an "in love" smiley) my computer has been out of commision for almost a year now, and I'm just now getting stuff loaded up in my new one. btw, I think a few of the graphics files got erased in the process or something. do I just redownload or something?

Yea, redownload is probably the way to go there, though you if you keep your RuntimeData/settings.dat, RuntimeData/inputbindings.dat file, and RuntimeData/Saves/ directory from the old installation you'll keep that info that way it was

That's a good suggestion for mantis.  It would be easy for me to do once I'm back in the office after this next week off.

I agree on that. Or maybe an option for not quite so many nebulae in a system at once. Don't get me wrong, it's quite beautiful. But it's kind of like going to the art museum and seeing that they've hung all the paintings side by side and top to bottom along one wall, instead of keeping them spread out so you have space to enjoy each one. Let me know if you post that mantis issue so I can go agree with it.

Please consider also giving us more control over our faction colors! Related issue "0005084: More color choices for players and AI". One recent commenter even mentioned the difficulty for colorblind players in larger multiplayer games.
