SD Hacker seems to behave a bit weird when there are two (or more?) ARS on the same planet -- Both ARS get hacked simultaneously, both ARS get the same ship selection, and when you pick a ship from one of them, the other ARS doesn't have ship options anymore.

Out of curiousity, how the heck did you get 2 ARS's on a single planet?
Yea, how?  10-planet map?  That probably doesn't work right, no.  Will put that on my list :)

Yeah, doubled-up ARS happen frequently in 10-planet maps.

So, I did the new hacking, and it doesn't say anything. It would be nice if there was a message somewhere saying, hack complete or something. Where do you get to choose one of the 3 ships?

Also, what is with the marching ants overlay on every single planet? I don't remember turning that on; both my friend and I are trying to figure out how to turn it off.

Also, is there an easy way I can send my controls to my friend? The controls file to be missing a few things.

In my tests the chat line was coming out ok, it says "Hack successful: AI Advanced Research Station reprogrammed to diversify projects." It might be whizzing by depending on what else is going on, though, or perhaps there's a bug preventing the output.

Where do you get to choose one of the 3 ships?
The ship-design hacker's description is kind of longwinded because I couldn't come up with a more concise way, but when it says it "can hack an AI-controlled Advanced Research Station to allow you to (after you capture the ARS, from the ARS tab of the tech menu on that planet) pick from 3 possible new ship types rather than just automatically getting one of them" it means:

1) Select a science ship on that planet.
2) Switch to the "ARS" tab.
3) Click one of the three ship types.

Sorry about the confusion, that's a new thing in 5.028 that displays the planetary "gravity well"; further out than the inner circle and you cannot build structures or unload transports; further out than the outer circle and everything moves painfully slowly.  Basically the existence of those wasn't being communicated at all outside the minimap and it was a serious source of ??? , so worth a shot.

I anticipated that many players would find it annoying (though I could have made that easier by picking a color other than the default full-white), so it can be disabled by the "Disable Planet Area Display" toggle on the interface tab of the settings menu.  If it proves to be generally more annoyance than help I may make that default to on, instead :)

The controls file should have everything on the CTRLS window itself (let me know if something isn't making it in there), and the inputbindings.dat file contains all of the key associations, but non-key-binding stuff on the Settings window is in settings.dat (fyi, the settings.dat also stores your license keys).

Anyway, if there's something that seems nontransferable, let me know.

Okay, I think I've got the existing pages updated for the patch changes.

There was a *lot* of stuff changed, including the ship caps on all the guardians for some reason?

Think I may have botch the spire fleet ships though but I'm of time for tonight.

Probably going to make a hacking page tomorrow so that it can be linked to rather then explaining the same thing over and over.

D.

"In response to your hacking at <Planet>, the AI has responded by blanketing the planet in Tachyon Radiation" - Don't leave your hacker behind ignored, apparently.  :'(

Dude, that's cold.  Effective though.  Had to laugh, though.  "There's no eye on this planet, where the HECK are all these zombies coming .... oh, right..."

Since the explanation doesn't really do it justice...

Hacking an ARS:

First, find yourself a happy planet with an ARS on it.  Now, build yourself off the Ship Design Hacker in the Econ menu, stuff it in a transport, and drag it along to your new happy ARS planet.  Do NOT capture the planet, but you will want to nerf it.

Unload your transport and drop off your ship design hacker.  When you click on your hacker with it's 10:00 timer, you'll see something similar to this:

Do not panic, the hacker just isn't done yet.  For the next 10 minutes, proceed to abuse the threat that you've unleashed from the AI.

After 10 minutes, you'll see this:

Woo, you've hacked the ARS.  Now don't laugh at what I ended up with, but when you're done, your friendly neighborhood ship hacker will have this new 'tab' available, the ARS tab:

Yes, really, I did get a choice between Shield Bearer, Autobomber, and Neinzul Vulture.  I'll withold comment, I know some folks really like Vultures.  Shield Bearer it is, I guess.  *click click click* WHAT?!

You can't PICK one yet, though.  You'll notice they're greyed out.

Once you've started construction (you don't even have to finish/capture the ARS) of your command center, these selections will light up and you'll be able to select your ship.  My guess is the lack of capture is a bug, but it's not exactly an important one.  You've already paid the price for the planet by popping the cmd center, you might as well capture the ARS and get the local K.

Once they're lit, you can click it and you'll get your standard 'new ship' message for MK I/II of your new ship.

Hopefully that'll help any confusion.

Current 'help text' reads as:
Quote
This ship is an offshoot of the science line and does not acutally generate knowledge.  It takes a significant amount of time and resources to build, but can hack an AI-controlled Advanced Research Station to allow you to (after you capture the ARS, from the ARS tab of the tech menu on that planet) pick from 3 possible new ship types rather than just automaticallly getting one of them.  The process requires the hacker to remain stationary on the ARS's planet for 10 minutes while the planet is still under AI Control.  This enrages the AI at their planet while the lab is present there as they view this as sabotage, so be prepared for an ongoing AI response against your untis on that planet and nearby.

NOTE: Each time you hack an ARS the AI's response to future hacking increases significantly.  Also, each subsequent ship-design-hack will make the problem far worse than the previous one.  Beware.

Might I recommend the following rephrase:
Quote
This ship is an offshoot of the science line and does not actually generate knowledge.  Instead, it can hack an AI-controlled Advanced Research Station that is under AI Control if left stationary on the planet for 10 minutes.  Once hacked, a selection of 3 ships will be available upon taking control of the ARS (look for an ARS tab inside the research station) instead of the usually automatically gifted single selection.  The AI considers this sabotage and will respond against your units both on that planet and nearby.

NOTE: Each time you hack an ARS the AI's response to any type of future hacking attempt will increase significantly.  Also, each subsequent ship-design-hack will increase the response far worse than any previous hack did.  Beware.

Stop the animation, and annoyance will decrease quite a bit. I don't need it myself, but the rotation induces a little nausea. Style-wise, I'd also thin it out to around 1-4 pixels circles instead of the fat "mommy coupon cutter" dashes.

Minor changes to GUDare's suggestion, tightening up the wording:

Quote
This ship is an offshoot of the science line but does not actually generate knowledge.  Instead, it can hack an Advanced Research Station under AI Control if left stationary in the system with the ARS for 10 minutes.  Once hacked, a selection of 3 types will be available when the ARS is captured (from the ARS tab of the research station) instead of getting a random ship type .  The AI considers this sabotage and will respond against your units both on that planet and nearby.

NOTE: Each time you hack an ARS the AI's response to any type of future hacking attempt will increase significantly.  Also, each subsequent ship-design-hack will increase the response far worse than any previous hack did.  Beware.

oh btw, I believe hovering over a wave warning to get more info is not working yet. something pops up at the bottom of the screen, but it is not containing any tekst.
Also I get to see the phrase "Unhandled Errors" at the right side of the screen, whenever a wave pops up.

It was working in my tests, but perhaps there's some case where it gets confused.  Can you post the UnhandledErrors.txt log from your game's RuntimeData directory?  A save where the errors occur would be good, too.

Thanks :)

I guess it's completely random when it works or when it doesn't. current incoming wave of maws is showing right. I'll post the UnhandledErrors log now and the save later if I can find a wave that is showing improperly.

Edit: Forgot I had already made a screenshot too.

Edit 2: got one, incoming wave of fighters is giving the error. save attached

Hmm.  Loaded the save, no errors, mouseover on the alert works fine.  A tricksy one, it seems to be.

Possibly related to the install? Similar to the missing sprites bug maybe?
Time to roll out another ball of death.
