I have two HFFs overlapping my home force field in my current game (one Mk1, one Mk2), although they're not exactly aligned if that's somehow the problem... but anyway, works for me. Sounds like it could be a mantis?

I'm doing that just fine, putting a Hardened FF under my HFF. I can't tell why it wouldn't work for you though.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Just to let everyone else know, as of this writing, 5.017 will undo the change to forcefields and let them hold back enemy ships again, thus solving all these tricky new issues by undoing the thing that caused them. Anyways, I want to thank Chris and Keith for spending some time this last week or two on AI War, when AVWW is supposed to be your big priority now. Once 5.017 comes out, I think the players will be happy with it for a while, or at least I will, and will be willing to wait again.

Yep, our pleasure.  I think it was worthwhile as a thing to explore, and I'll put out 5.017 tomorrow.  And a few good things did come of it, such as fixing the teleporting ships getting through forcefields to wormholes thing.  And ultimately the "flypaper forcfields" exploit that was being reported we fixed in a different manner, anyway. But I think it's good to try experimental things, or else you never find unexpected answers.  In this case we didn't really find that much overall, but negative results are still results, as any real scientist worth his salt will tell you. ;)
