my worries were less about unstableness and more about large faults in the design. I've actually never encountered a crash in AI war (although I've never finished a game :P ) but i have encountered some terrible design mistakes in the betas (which is normal as said).. and I'm very ocd about it.
AI war isnt just playable in a 2 hour setting and when I'm 3 hours into, what could become, a 20 hour game and see some unit is vastly under or overpowered then i lose all interest.. thats why i wanted a 'stable' release :P

Then give up all hope, the game will never be so stable as to not feature such balance issues  ;)

(Seriously; I know exactly how you feel...but there's just no way around it.)

You could play a Defender campaign! :)

Ah, yea, I can understand that.  Things are better balanced in 5.010 than in 5.000, in my opinion, and we're not exactly making rapid changes right now ;)

That said, we are trying to get 5.011 out the door today or tomorrow, it's just been a pretty busy news day for AVWW.

The balance is pretty good in 5.000, but I think it's noticeably improved over that in 5.010.  Nothing too enormous, though.  The really majorly wacky stuff like what you're talking about I think got sorted out in the 4.x betas.  I remember the fun of running into those, too.  Heh.

The other thing that I would note about balance: you will always find something that is under or over powered in a given game.  The reason is that since the mix of ships is so random, sometimes a ship is a great counter to everything that the enemy has, and sometimes everything that the enemy has is a counter to it.  That's part of the evaluation of your options as you play the game, is choosing what to use for the specific scenario you have.  If all choices were always equally viable, then all choices would be pretty meaningless.  This is very much a game about Finding The Right Tool For The Current Job.

That said, when something is habitually under or over powered in a variety of scenarios, obviously that's a major problem and we address it as soon as we can.  But you can't really compare a period when we're actively adding dozens of new ships per week during a beta of an expansion (or during the 4.0 changeover) to our general beta periods when it's all tweaks and such.  It's rather that balance tweaks make things substantially worse than they already were, and they generally make things much better; it's adding new ships that tends to be the unbalances-things-for-a-while activity, because adding one new ship means rebalancing a lot of others to make sure everything makes sense together.  Apples and oranges between those kinds of times to now.

In terms of the prerelease, I'm going to get that out the door tomorrow morning.  Was going to do it today, but man it's been a long day and I'm just wiped.

Hey dont let my initial post stand as a reflection of my view on arcen. I seriously mean it when i say (and have said before) that i respect this company more then any other current company out there and I'm super impressed by the customer support. I was honestly just baffled by the sudden stop of patches during a beta.
In fact when i purchase other indie games with large issues people (fanboys :P )always argue: 'well its an indie company and a large game you have to accept X problem' and i always have to mention AI war as an example of the opposite :P

I just thought: 'Game is in a beta stage.. therefore there likely exist (larger) problems... arcen is busy with another product.. they are neglecting AI war' :P

And it was really only the fact that it was a beta.. to be super honest i actually think you guys release TO MANY patches for AI war xD stuff changes so much. (but i know some people looove that which is understandable)

Anyways keep up the good work and good luck with the next game

Just play it man, the balance is really good. Since those spire blade spawners were balanced after 5.0 I don't think there are any big balance issues underlying.

Thanks for the kind words, DakaSha.  We are leaving AI War in something of a stasis state at the moment, but that's only because of the intense amount of work getting it to the point where we were comfortable doing that.  Rather than trying to split attention during these early months with AVWW, we took an extra month and a half pre-5.0 to really polish the heck out of AI War so that then we could do less with it in the period where AVWW really could use more full attention.

But this is basically a pendulum, and it swings both ways.  Things got quiet with AI War when Tidalis was in early development, too, but then our business AI War development period came after Tidalis came out.  With a limited staff, there's only a certain amount of focus we can project at any one time, but when we are focusing on something we like to give it close to our full attention unless there is something actually broken about another product we support.

Which, thankfully, has largely not been the case with AI War since 5.0, hence the quiet updates.  Anyway, the latest one is now out, after an unprecedented month and a half between beta updates for this game: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,8708.0.html
