How do I use hard AI types in the beta
« on: December 23, 2010, 06:17:40 pm »
I use steam, and when ever I put the beta on, I can never use the "Everything" AI type, even though it is there.

I want to test it out, but there seems like there is no logical way I can unlock it.

That's part of the Light of the Spire expansion.  If you're in the demo mode for that, then you can't use hard AI types, you'd just have to disable the LotS expansion to be able to use other hard types (but not that one, since it's in the expansion you'd be disabling).  Alternatively, if you buy a key for the expansion, you can unlock it and the demo restrictions go away.  Most likely you want to either disable it or buy it, either way.  Normally our betas don't include expansions, except when there is one that hasn't been released officially yet (like now).

So i'm on steam, and if I buy a key off the site, will I still be able to activate it, or will I have to buy the key off steam, and use it then?

You can register it in the game just fine if you buy it anywhere, but Steam won't keep track of the key for you (it won't know you have the expansion).  However, after release of the expansion on Steam in January, you should be able to register the key officially with Steam, and then it would keep track of it for you, etc.  Sometimes there's a two-week delay after release before Valve gets that set up, but the only other worry there is if pirates keygen the key and register it with Steam first (which has happened to a few folks with the base game, but that's been out a long time).

To be clear, none of that prevents you from playing with the expansion no matter what, it's just a matter of having it officially registered with Steam.  Hope that makes sense.

So let me get this strait:

I can but the game off your site, but if I lose it, nothing will be there to tell me it again. But if I buy it off steam, and if I lose it, steam will be there to help me remember the CD key...

Right?

But you can buy it "not on Steam", and once the expansion comes out of beta and into official release, you can register it with Steam without having to rebuy it. Then Steam can manage it for you just like normal. I know this works because I did it for the Children of Neinzul expansion.

Well, you have the key in your email, etc.  And if you lose it, you can email us and we'll send it back out to you.  It's rather like buying a physical copy of some game and getting a CD key on the booklet, you just need to keep track of it.  Though in this case, we can send you a replacement by looking up your purchase with an email, whereas with physical goods you're just out of luck.

But, also what techsy730 said is correct.
