AI War Beta 4.052 Released!
« on: December 18, 2010, 05:13:21 pm »
Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2010/12/ai-war-beta-4052-released.html

Today I have absolutely no time, so I'll just leave you with the release notes for this one.

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 4.000 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 4.000 or later, you can download that here.

double hard mode is pretty hard as expected. those golem waves are a real pain. i'm testing in a very-high progress multihomeworld blitz game

Before they were stupidly easy, 3000 mark 3 AI ships would be compressed into something you could kill with a few hundred mixed mark vessels and some mark 1 turrets. I haven't seen one since the change, but I'll be interested to see if they live up to the mass of ships they replace now. It's entirely possible this is too far in the other direction, but they certainly weren't balanced as they were.

We like to practice the bubble sort method of balancing. ;)  And, actually, that works pretty well, overall, in terms of arriving at the ideal balance quicker than we might otherwise.  But, yeah, a Mark V Hunter/Killer is like having something like 7,000 mark IVish ships all in one ship, so it ought to be... rather intense.

I'm sure it's harder with something like this, that shouldn't necessarily be cropping up all that often, and that only get seen fairly late in the game.

Yes, exactly.  And which really doesn't even crop up in every game in the first place, at all.

When do Hunter/Killers show up now?  I thought the Hunter/Killer creation was tied to the threat overdrive from the (now-removed) bottleneck stuff.

Nevermind: I reread the release notes and see that it's the high levels of threat in general that causes them to be created, not specifically threat from that cause.  Cool.

AKA, when the AI is going to bring down the pain of a few thousand ships, it scraps them and turns them into one big ship now. Which makes me slightly sad. I loved the huge battles, and always marveled at the fact that as powerful and bleeding edge a gaming computer I have, AI War and Dwarf Fortress are still the only games that use a noticeable percentage of my power :P

There should be an arena game mode, where it gives you a random planet and you can throw whatever ships and buildings you want on it and see what happens. ;D

Certainly there should be an option to disable hunter-killers, which from my understanding are only there to increase the performance of lesser computers ;p

Yeah, I thought of that as soon as I posted. It would be nice to have a hunter killer button in the ship selection for campaign setup.

It would be nice to have the hunter killer as a bonus ship type option in campaign setup.
