AI war Beta 4.032 Released
« on: November 12, 2010, 09:33:26 pm »
Not really copied from here

Today's Release keeps going with the Fallen Spire plotline, adding clever new stuff that Keith promises might either ruin your day, or be a cakewalk.

Also, a rebalance of a few shiptypes, most notably, anything that has a bonus to the "Heavy" type, has gotten a nerf - its been in the past unfortunate that many 'heavy' hulls lack the hp of 'superheavy' hulls, yet the bonuses were often similar. Hybrids, on the other hand, may have just became harder to kill.

We've thrown in a bunch of new guardians for the Light of the Spire, including suicide, warp gate, and a few more. Also added a few random asteroids, that will potentially do stuff, but currently just look pretty.

Finally, an upgrade from unity 3.0 to 3.1, something that will probably fix stuff.. And a bunch of other related bugfixes. Its a standard update that can be applied from ingame. If you dont have 4.000 or later, you can download it here.

WARNING: MAC VERSION CURRENTLY CORRUPTED. DO NOT DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE ON MAC.
Edit: Looks like osx version is good! :D

Okay, we're now all good on the mac version, too -- the upgrade of the version of Unity as a minor patch was new to us, and took a bit of fiddling.

If you downloaded a corrupt version of 4.032 for osx already, then what you need to do is download this file and unpack it into your AI War installation folder:  http://www.arcengames.com/dl/AIWar4032.zip  That will overwrite the messed up AIWar.app, and you'll be all set.

If you didn't already download the osx version, you can now do so without qualms.  Enjoy!

The new asteroids look pretty cool. I don't mind having them all in one spot (per system) but I'm curious if the line formation they all appear in now is a placeholder.

Yes, I made my game in version 4.030 or 4.031.  Unless of course that is why they're lined up like that.

Here's my notes from the blog: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2010/11/ai-war-beta-4032-released.html

This release adds a bunch of stuff.  For the base game, that includes a number of balance tweaks to make the Heavy and UltraHeavy hull types not quite as hard-countered by bombers and the like, and some performance tweaks.  It also has some minor interface tweaks and extensions, as well as a few other balance changes to the higher-level starships (spire and core, mainly).  We also made major changes to the sound effects part of the engine in hopes (once again) of nailing that elusive OSX bug.  And we upgraded the game from Unity 3.0 to 3.1.

For the Light of the Spire expansion, there's a ton of stuff here: more balance changes and improvemetns have been made to the Fallen Spire story-driven minor faction, and episode 4 of the Fallen Spire is now also in place.

Additionally, 35 new AI Guardians (5 marks each of 7 new guardian types) have been added for LotS: Carrier, EMP, Self Destruction, Special Forces Rally, Vampire, Warp Gate, and Zombie.  Some of these are tough enough that they only appear on higher difficulties, and fairly rarely there.  In all, this nearly doubles the number of types of Guardians from the base game.

Also for LotS, six different kinds of asteroids are now seeded throughout the galaxy in the following order of rarity (from least to most rare): Reptite, Pysite, Xampite, Ebonite, Adamantite, Titanite. You can't do anything with these quite yet, but they'll be useful very soon for creating the Spirecraft ships (those "larger than a starship, smaller than a golem" ships).  Start staking out your Titanite now! ;)

Oh, and there are tons of new graphics for the Light of the Spire stuff.  All of the Fallen Spire ship graphics are now in (though some of the far zoom icons are still temporary), and various other ships as well.  In the base game, even the existing Spire Starship has been upgraded to use the new visual styling that will be common for all the Spire ships.   See to the right for what that looks like -- it's even cooler in-game, on a darker background.

Now that a lot of the art stuff has been worked out (since I'm doing all the art on this one -- using ZBrush, Photoshop, and a Wacom tablet, and in some cases Groboto, if you're curious), the actual new ships will be coming through quicker.  Coming up with a compelling art style, and figuring out the specifics of ZBrush, which I'm new to, took more of this week than I'd planned on, but the results are well worth it as you can see above.

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 4.000 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 4.000 or later, you can download that here.

That "seeding all in a line" thing only happens in existing savegames, and I'm not sure why it does that.  It does that for any ships that are belatedly added to a new savegame, I'll have to look at that.  In fact: http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=1302

which reminds me - keith didn't seem to know, are asteroids seeded in games made before .032?

Yes indeed, they will.  Though, evidently, they will all be in a line rather than their usual formation.  I've noticed that with Guardians all lining up in existing saves in the past, but apparently that's a global thing.

Yes, I made my game in version 4.030 or 4.031.  Unless of course that is why they're lined up like that.

Yep, you got it.

Mixed feelings

about the new spire art.

It's pink because it's being munitions boosted.  All ships show up as pink-tinged then, but that's only because the spire ships are so very white that it makes them instead look so very pink with that on.  I'll agree, that looks super bubblegum there, and not great at all.  I may need to take the munition-boosting colorization off in general, the lines are good enough and it really degrades some of the graphics.  In my post above, you'll see the art how it would look minus the boosting.

yeah, they are a bit stark white without the boost, but the pink just makes them look *silly*.

they dont look battle ready/proven anymore.

Well, the white is what they'll be in terms of the graphics for them go.  I spent a good portion of this week developing the style and the graphics for a ton of the ships, and I'm quite fond of the look.  They don't look evil or dark anymore, which is the idea with these.  But you're also looking at some of the most puny of those ships; the dreadnoughts, etc, are freaking massive and the white really makes them stand out in an unusual way.  We wanted them to kind of almost have an ambient glow to them, without them actually glowing.  Took me days to get this stuff right, but I'm pleased with the result (aside from the pink).
