Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2010/11/ai-war-beta-4027-first-light-of-spire.html

This update fixes a few small things for the main game, and then includes the first of the new content for Light of the Spire!  Also, preorders are now open for Light of of the Spire (it's a full expansion, so $9.99).  Right now it's just available through the Arcen store, as is generally the case during our preorder/beta periods, but in December it should be available through all the usual suspects that carry AI War products.

The Spire are coming...
Ravaged by their recent encounters with the same AIs that pushed humanity to the brink of extinction, the Spireare an alien race that have also been all but destroyed.  However, while the AIs were successful in their surpriseattack against the Spire, the Spire are far more powerful than even the AIs seem to have realized.  The Zenith werebroken-down and ancient when humanity encountered them, but the Spire were at the height of their deadly poweruntil quite recently.

Now the splinteredremains of their race are regrouping, and entering the galaxy with a vengeance.  Their attitude toward humanity, who after all spawned the AIs that harmed the Spire so, is unclear.  Proceed with caution.
If you'd like to read about what features have been implemented or announced so far, please seethis page on the wiki.

This Expansion Is Still In Beta!
Beta means it's not finished, and that you should expect bugs and balance issues until it gets out of beta.  Butwe're making it available to folks early, because there's already some seriously cool stuff in here that we thinkyou'll enjoy, and we'd also love feedback on it all.  Light of the Spire will be released in the first week of Decemberor thereabouts, so the development time schedule is very short on this one -- we're leveraging a lot of groundworkthat we put in place in 4.0, as well as picking the features that go into this very carefully, in order to make thispossible.

But, even so, we're obviously concerned about scope creep and want to avoid having to go back on a feature we promise. So with that in mind, we're being rather uncharacteristically secretive about the features in this expansion untilthey come out.  Basically, the only stuff we'll talk about in concrete terms in advance are things we knowwe can without a doubt accomplish in this timeframe.  Stay tuned over the next three weeks or so, and all willbe revealed as that time passes.  If you want to wait until after that period to order or preorder this one, wequite understand.  We think you'll agree that this is the best expansion yet to AI War when you see it, though.Again: stay tuned!

Key Features That Will Be Coming
* 100+ new ships, including new "spirecraft" ships (larger than starships, smaller than golems).
* 2 new campaign types: Defender and Construction.
* Exciting new Fallen Spire "minor" faction.
* New in-game music tracks.
* Other new stuff not yet revealed. :)

What's In This Beta Version For LotS So Far?
The exciting new Defender mode, as well as the Vanilla and Everything AI types make their debut.  As a warning, Defender mode is extremely preliminary, so will probably need a lot of tweaking to be in balance.  But it's pretty fun already, if you like getting beat up. ;)

Also bear in mind that we do still need to teach the AI a few new tricks for this mode.  It's not used to working on a timer, it's used to thoroughly crushing you.  When it's on the clock, it needs to do a better job of prioritizing your quick defeat, rather than obliterating every last trace of you.

In short, if you play with too few planets the AI will crush you; too many, on too short a time schedule, and it won't have time to crush you so you'll likely win despite the thousands of high-level ships slowly scouring you from the galaxy.  We'll be working on that in future releases, but for now we suggest you use maybe 4-5 planets as perhaps a sweet spot.  Or, feedback on what seems to work best (and what doesn't) is also welcome.  Part of the point of the beta, after all

More to come soon!

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 4.000 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 4.000 or later, you can download that here.

Arcen, you could have asked nicely and I would have gladly gave ya another $20 for the base game. You are too kind throwing in a whole expansion with beta access!

A "stand and defend" survival mode? Now there's a fantastic idea!

That was an easy sell.  :P

Just wanted to say that you've been doing a great job with this game lately. I started a little while ago with 3.89 and was honestly pretty lukewarm towards it, but 4.0 is really clicking for me. Hopefully LotS pushes it into "classic" territory.

Also, I hope more "anti-blobbing" measures like AI eyes and Raid Engines make the cut, they really make the game more interesting.

Oh snap. I have GOT to play defender mode now! In that screenshot you have 16 home planets + 8 non home planets all to yourself.

MUST PLAY!

Well done on placing in this first leg of the race, ordered and now all keyed in for the Expansion.   8)

Now then...

The next magic trick is to give me a way to pre-order Alden Ridge to an especially early degree, like say by the latter bit of the month of November.  Of course, this doesn't need to be in any sort of playable/downloadable state, just to have all squared away with The Key and lying in wait---Black Friday/GoG backlog and the like might well be pretty hefty/wallet depleting this time around unless some spare gaming cash manifests somewhere in December and beyond.  It'd just be wrong to break my perfect streak on here for a little thing like running out of money before the next chance to throw down for arrives   ;)
The Roguelike Guy...also hopefully an overall skilled developer as time rolls on.

Interesting background for the Spire. Just curious, though - IIRC in a previous post it was stated that the Spire had somewhat better relations with the AI than with the humans.  Given the AI being the direct cause of ther Spire's problems, whereas the humans are only indirectly responsible, I'd think AI relations to the Spire would be bad or worse.

The Vanilla AI seems like something which should be included in the base game, and not exclusive to the expansion.  I'm sure the expansion will have enough content either way.

Not that it matters to me, I intend to buy the Spire expansion just like I have all the others.

Yeah, it's something we shifted around since that post. :)  Good eye.

Pretty much, yeah.  Keith has been doing a ton of work on the Fallen Spire minor faction, too, but the first of that won't be out until tomorrow.  And I've been doing a huge amount of work on the art for various guardians and guard posts and such, but I couldn't get that quite ready in time for the start yet, either.  As I noted before, this was a very EARLY beta with just a bit of stuff to start out.  But expect rapid additions over the next days and weeks, as we've only got 2 days and 2 weeks left for getting basically feature-complete.  We should be fine, there's just a lot of half-finished stuff at the moment that isn't really exposed yet, based on how our workflows happened to work out.

The Vanilla AI seems like something which should be included in the base game, and not exclusive to the expansion.  I'm sure the expansion will have enough content either way.

As a general rule, we don't add new AI Types except in expansions.  I debated back and forth on this one, but then decided not to go back on that.  Not that the LotS expansion wouldn't have enough new content anyway, but I figure it's best to stick to the rules on what-sort-of-content-is-released-how rather than making a likely-to-grow list of exceptions to them.

Also, Vanilla is something that was really added more for experienced players anyway, as it's not something I'd care to shuttle new players into; ideally they start with random moderate/easier or random easier on the base game, when it comes to that.
