This update is focused on balance changes.  The big thing that has changed is the cost structure of higher-mark ships.  They are now significantly and predictably higher-cost than their lower-level counterparts, which means two things: the lower tier ships are once again more useful (due to a better cost-to-benefit ratio), and the late game requires a more substantial economy than in recent versions.

That last is important, because in the process of making the early game economy more robust and manageable for players, we also inadvertently made the late-game economy kind of a non-issue.  Well, now the player economy will have to keep growing throughout the entire game if they wish to sustain massive high-level fleets.  This also heavily nerfs the mercenaries, since they're correspondingly more expensive.  Some of the mark I starships, fleet ships, and turrets are actually a bit cheaper than before, though, along with all this.

Additionally, player home command stations got a buff to not be so fragile, and the AI now gets their own fortresses that are a lot more powerful in light of the increased firepower that the players are carting around.  Oh, and cutlasses are no longer death on wheels (or, I guess, death wheels).

And lastly... Mark V Fighters.  At long last, after countless requests.  And we threw in Mark V Bulletproof Fighters and MicroFighters, as well.  Enjoy!

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 4.000 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 4.000 or later, you can download that here.

well, id MEANT to comment on the fighters.. and then i pasted a few lines of the update into irc and chatted a bit, then I got distracted looking at the picture, and realized it said LotS.

I'm getting weird aggro within the first fiveish minutes of this game... a Mark III Heavy Beam Guardian just came out of a wormhole. I think Scouts are causing aggro now - it seems that my scouts are wanting to fly up to enemies and drop cloaking on my homeworld, too? I started getting stragglers from wormholes after I sent scouts in and after I scouted a mark III planet these guys showed up a few minutes later. Save attached.

e: just realized, this was my first game with Hybrid Hives on, and I'm not yet entirely sure what they do... still, I have a Mark III guardian sitting on my homeworld, I doubt that's part of it?

e again: it's consistant, I just started another game and got a Mark III Raider Guardian on my homeworld at the three-minute mark.

Just so he has a little extra material - tried it with different AI types. When scouts hit Jesro (I think that's the name, far left of the map, two hops from my homeworld) it's setting off something that's causing a handful of Mark III ships and a Guardian to come after me, in addition to some slight aggro from other places.

Cool, thanks.  I'll be really surprised if it isn't minor-faction-related in some fashion.  Perhaps those are guardians spawned by the hybrid hives or something, not sure.

Mark I scouts have guns!?  Whoops, that would account for why there is threat coming from them if they are shooting!

Yeah, I started one last game to check them out - evidently, half the time they're using scouting behavior and the other half of the time they're trying to attack things. Bizarro, eh? I'm surprised nobody noticed before...
