From what I've seen the really early waves are probably ok, to avoid really slaughtering the player before they get a chance to catch their breath (though that's not a bad thing to try for on the higher difficulties).  But the further along things get, the more the AI has to use a rocket-powered-sledgehammer to even make a dent ;)

Indeed. The AI have yet to ever threaten me with a wave. They are simply way too weak atm. CPAs can sometimes cause trouble, but due to the fact that most ships come from different directions and not all at once, they are usually  handled quite well. But they are WAY more disruptive than normal waves (which are nothing but a note in the log)

EDIT:
Might mention that tractor/mine avoiding waves are usually a lot more disruptive than those that aren't. Neinzul waves are the worst and cause major disruptions or even loss in the early game, due to their overflowing numbers.

The AI need to start sending FF generators through with waves at higher AIP- afterall, it is in supply  ;)
