Has there always been just a couple of AI slots available in lobby? How about enabling more?  ;D
No ;)

Goodness, that would be a big refactoring...

Oh, okey then... just thought of the number of players + AI and the number of planets.

Just a quick question, but will you be making the original soundtrack available for download as well? I like a lot of the remixes, but prefer a few of the older tracks. I'm sure this has been asked before, so apologies for that.

Well, if you want the soundtrack from a specific old version, you can download that version :)

I didn't really pose that question very well, did I. I should just be able to mix and match tracks without issue then provided they're in the Music folder? :)

I'm not sure where the discussion for "the current state of the game" goes, so how about in here for now...

I just lost the game on the newest release. I did not build any starships. My play style has typically been in favor of fleet ships because they are more fun for me to see large battles. So naturally, I built a full capacity fleet right off the bat and sent them to an adjacent planet, difficulty seven. When I got there, there were a ton of guardians ( I opened a bug report showing screenshots of this battle, 650), and I was summarily murdered. The hit points are truly incredible, and I couldn't even make a dent on this planet.

So, my question is, are fleet ships intended as being decent invaders or should we be trying to use starships all the time? I'm tempted to just cloak up and run around assassinating everything being invisible after suiciding my fleet ships against a tachyon Guardian.

Ahh yes, the hardcore crowd (no pun intended) raves && cheers && is excited about guardians and what not, the casual aiwars gamer like me is certainly not excited. I get my (sweet) a** handed on a platter everytime by mk2 starships runnning rampant in my HW at 3:30....bummer: that's on 'very easy'..

I hope arcen games knows the needs of a 'typical strategy gamer'. 90% of all Civ4 gamers *don't* play the game on diety. Yes, I know, things will get sorted out, nevertheless, I think the feedback from the forum might be a bit misleading, cause it comes from a small group of dedicated pros who always want 'more challence', but that leaves the average gamer in the cold.

Cmon, flame me, go play pacman ;D, seriously, the ever increasing challence was the reason I bailed out of aiwars for the first time && I know I'm not alone. Quite some friends ditched the game when things like CPA made an apperance.

Anyway, my .2€, have a nice sunday....pia

It sounds like you probably ran afoul of a glitch, not an intended situation, in that game. Chris did just tell you the present game balance is a bit of a mess, and the beta still has some bugs (obviously, or it wouldn't be a beta), so I don't think you should take your experiences with the current build at low difficulty all that seriously.

That said, if you quit because of CPA's, perhaps you need to rethink your strategies. That's supposed to be the fun of all this, you know, looking at new situations and coming up with new ways to deal with them. If the game remains static, and the same tactics always work, what's the point in continuing to play?

I'm a fairly middle-of-the-road strategy gamer, certainly a long way from being "hardcore." I play Civ 4 on Noble (or even Warlord if I'm warming up), but as of the 3.189 release AI War on difficulty 7 was an absolute pushover. With the ship numbers reduced and the emphasis on static defenses, the game got distinctly easier in the later SlimDX betas. This is just a correction back towards the original (much lauded) difficulty of the game. This game is all about hard choices, without some teeth to make those choices meaningful what's the point in playing it?   Guardians and the like are new tools to make the game strategically interesting, that's a phenomenally good thing and something for everyone to be excited about, regardless of their preferred difficulty. When all's balanced properly very easy will still be very easy, but it should be a much more interesting "very easy" for the inclusion of these new elements. Difficulty 7 will hopefully be more like Difficulty 7 was back in July, thanks to the AI having new options. Everybody wins.

The hardcore crowd? I would say that I play the game a lot, but I don't consider myself hardcore. I hang out on difficulty seven or around there all the time. If the game is too hard, maybe you should turn the difficulty down.

As far as the new unity release, the balance is not there yet. I think everybody knows that. Now is the time that you can add your input and be heard, so if you feel that things are not balanced and that things are pushing you away, by all means speak up. None of us 'everyday' players are going to stand in your way, and I think there are multiple difficulties available where things can be tweaked to make it enjoyable for you. I would even stand up for 'casual' players, as I do believe the game is for everybody, and I don't think that excluding anyone is the point of all this.

So, hang in there, provide your feedback, and know that none of us are going to put you down because of it.

I recommend including some light or fleet starships in your fleet, siege starships too maybe. It helps a lot, just including the light starships made a big difference for me (so no knowledge cost). Beware of flak guardians, try and kite them if you can.

I've been raiding then pulling back to heal, a level 3 system was taking me at least three runs. Hit and run helps a lot too because some guardians will likely chase you back through the wormhole. clusters of MLRS turrets backed by your fleet seem to do well against them.

Yeah, with starships it is infinitely easier. My question was more about the role regular fleet ships are expected to play. Are they cannon fodder?

ZarahNeander, I was going to respond to your post, but I think TheMachineIsSentient said it better than I could have.  This is still a work in progress, and we welcome your input (particularly if it is coming from a less "hardcore" angle than most, though I don't think our other players are as hardcore as you think).  But please approach this as being on same team with us, rather than expecting (or providing) "flame".

I think this is not intended.  In a significant engagement you should expect losses among your fleet ships, whereas it is reasonable to avoid any starship casualties if you structure and execute the encounter properly (which includes a proper fleet-ship escort).  Not that you'll always be able to structure the encounters, etc.

But the fleet ships should be doing better than the impression I'm getting from your reports.

So is V 4.0 your big "make it or break it" plan, or is there a plan B as well?

I've been using the demo of the Unity version, and its quite nice. I'd buy it if I hadn't already. First priority though, would be to update those last two tutorials, because that's going to be crucial for new players.
