AI War Beta 3.714 Released!
« on: October 15, 2010, 02:47:01 pm »
3.714 is a pretty minor utility release, but has a number of nice fixes in it, such as melee ships that work, buffed starships, and alphabetized hull attack bonuses.  Another, larger, release will be coming later today.

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 3.701 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 3.701 or later, you can download the windows installer for 3.711, or the OSX installer for 3.712. Once you do an in-game update, they'll both be on the latest version, despite starting at slightly different versions.

*frown* the updater crashed again.
reinstalling just to be safe :\

Also, does the game check for updates at any time other than startup? It didn't seem to show there was an update when i quit to main menu

It only checks on first run. That's odd about the updater...

In the old AI War, a bunch of us found the Strong/Weak Vs display extremely handy. Some of us aren't familiar with every ship in the game, but the Strong/Weak display was really helpful for when we were unsure of how to counter a mass of a specific type of ship. For AI War 4, could you at least consider elaborating the combat multiplier table to state which ships it has X bonuses against?

Hi, new here...   8)
Anyhow, I happen to be a member of the strong vs. weak vs. supporters camp, because it did mean much less looking back and forth at stats to make sure a certain ship type is effective against another.  However, I have a suggestion: how about adding a "Recommended Targets" to the stats box for each ship?  It doesn't need to be quantified with a percentage, it can just be a "This ship should be used against etc, etc, etc.".  That way it doesn't need to be changed every time the game updates.

Isn't that exactly what this does? It says "This ship has a x20 damage bonus against these types of ships". I don't really see what's different.

Question:  With the removal of shields, what are Z-polarizers good against?

More accurately, how can I tell what's good against what on the fly?  With as many ship and types as we have, we need a good (non-memory-intensive) way to find out.

Z-Polarizers I think are good against...
I'll need to check again.

That's what I was saying.  We need a quick reference so that you don't need to memorize what ship has what armor type.

Also, my expansions turned themselves off this patch.  I had to turn off and turn back on my expansions in the hosting menu in order to get all the goodies associated with them (it was vanilla until I did that).  It was strange, since it said that they were active.  Who knows?

This plagued us just after unity betas started. Maybe the bug reappeared again....

I think the present bonus presentaion is great as-is, but here's an idea for something different:  first you click a ship. Then you hold a button down (let's say the "<" key) to see the ships it has bonuses against

that you've seen this game (similar to holding "t" to see the minimap).  That list can be an overlay (like the minimap) or a small text box next to the main one.  In the interest of saving space on the textbox thing,

just show that the ship has a bonus, not how much the bonus is.  We can save the details of the bonuses for the main textbox.

I added one more - it's annoying a bit:

I'm not sure if this happened on 3.713.

Question - are tachyon emitters supposed to be made from glass now? 20k hp is a bit on the low side.
