AI War Beta 3.709 Released
« on: October 12, 2010, 01:20:23 pm »
Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2010/10/ai-war-beta-3709-released.html

Copied:

This one is just a small release, overall, with some key bugfixes to the last version.  That said, however, there is a new implementation of the context menu, which we know a lot of people have been waiting for -- so yay!  There's also a couple of smaller balance tweaks in there.

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 3.701 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 3.701 or later, you can download that here.

Actually only 3 of the more minor context-menu functions are on there; though more should follow fairly soon.  And I've only seen one or two people actually ask about it not being there ;)

But very glad to have it going, it's shaping up much better than the old one, at least in my perspective.

Also, for anyone getting the update; the hybrids will still be spawning way faster than intended; I just now found the real bug underlying all that.

I thank you for the cloaker starship fixing, and am really glad to see auto-explore and auto-knowledge back :)

Yea,now your ships can automatically wander into massive swarms of hybrids! ;)

I'm happy about the keyboard support for the context menus, too.  Personally I really like being able to press Alt, O, 6 (not holding those, separate presses in order; and I had to use the controls window to bind Alt to open the context menu by itself) to quickly tell some random scout on the planet to get lost ;)  Now to have some modifier of O that selects all scouts on the planet... I think there was such a one, though the Unity Editor thinks Ctrl+O means something rather different.

Thanks, I am  looking forward to try out the solution to the sound problem. How can panning  solve a clipping problem? I know a lot about analog sound engineering, not so much about digital stuff, so this is beyond me ???

I am not at my home computer, so testing will have to wait until tomorrow. But as I mentioned in the bug tracker, there is a work-around, so to me it is not a major problem :)

Sure thing.  Well, apparently it has to do with mixing in general.  I got the idea from Pablo, our composer, who was doing some stuff like that recently on the remastered AI War tracks so that the bass line would mix better into the main music line.  Basically, I think the challenge is that there are multiple music channels (as long as you're not in mono), and if you push too much into any one channel it gets overloaded.  But by panning left and right with certain effects, you wind up with half as much stuff in each channel (but the same amount overall), which thus results in less wash-out.  If you think about it, it actually makes pretty good sense, but it's definitely not something I would have thought of on my own.

When doing a bunch of timing conversions, we forgot to preserve a "multiply this by 20" in the calculation of how many build points a spawner has to get to spawn a hybrid :)

I would recommend taking a look at the calculation for tachyon micro fighters as well. The case of me getting overrun in the first 4 minutes of a new game, that I pointed out in the thread for the previous release, seem to apply to this ship type.

F12 is the in-game binding, and it should work.  If not, there's always the good ol' Print Screen button.

Personally, I use an external program called Jing.

New version: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,7310.0.html

Incidentally, Giegue, this new version has a bunch of tools on the Players tab of the Stats screen to help you guage your own performance.  You can see if the game is running slow, and what your FPS is, etc, all in an easy-to-digest format.  And then of course can select the performance profile that seems appropriate based on that.

And there are some performance improvements in there that might help you, anyway -- fingers crossed!
