AI War Beta 3.703 Released.
« on: October 07, 2010, 02:28:20 am »
Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2010/10/ai-war-beta-3703-released.html

Copied:

Lots and lots of good stuff in this one.  To whit:
  • Some of the not-yet-ported galaxy map controls have now been ported.
  • New options for unloading transports have been created (people have wanted that for a while)
  • The tutorials are now back in place and the first two have been updated content-wise.
  • A bunch of the keybindings have been tweaked and now have in-game descriptions.
  • Multiplayer for existing savegames should definitely now work.
  • Other various bugfixes are in and items have been ported.
  • And... my personal favorite: that issue with the orthographic camera that was leading to blurriness on many monitors is now fixed, at long last.  Thank goodness -- the game is so much crisper now.
This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 3.701 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 3.701 or later, you can download that here.

I really like the improvements and the overall look and feel of the game.

About the Tutorial Campaign: It tells me to first conquer the planet to the left (Fixujo) with like 10 to 20 of each Bombers, Frigates and Fighters.
The first thing that happened when I entered the Planet is I flew into a huge Minefield and lost my whole fleet.
Also with this small fleet it will take ages to destroy the Guard Posts on this Planet.

I think this can repel new players making them think that this is an overly complicated, difficult and mostly boring game.

Maybe you can remove the minefield and change the tutorial text to more like 50 of each ship types.
Or lower the health of the quard posts.

Just to make it a little easier for new players and give it a more dynamic feel.

If you want me to I can ad a request in the Bug Tracker.

Btw. Over the last couple of months the game became highly adjustable to ones preferred playstile.
With all the minor factions and AI plots. Maybe you could make a video or something on this or at least put this
into the at a glance features since I think this is a good selling point.

Regards,

Many thanks, all!

freeman08:

Regarding the tutorials, only tutorials 1 and 2 have been updated.  Right now, tutorial 3 and the intermediate tutorial are still woefully out of date and require a ton of rework -- I plan to do so.  I agree, right now there's a ton of stuff that needs to be done with it, as it hasn't accounted for the new guard posts or anything.

That's a great point about the adjustable options, too.  I will definitely keep that in mind when I'm redoing the features pages, etc (which also need to be heavily revamped).  Should be great!

Yep, now the picture is very nice and crisp! Major breakthrough :)

There is still some sound distortion. I have noticed as a workaround, that if I turn off either the weapons channel  or the explosions channel, the distortion does not happen.

There is still a tiny periodic lag, occuring every 8-10 seconds. When I am not in a battle, I can almost ignore this. Unfortunately, the lags also causes sound fall outs, as well as hickups in scrolling and zooming, which can be very hard to ignore.

If you can report that as a separate issue, that would be great.  I imagine we can hunt that down, but I don't always see it (sometimes do, sometimes don't).  Not sure what that is, but it's probably something that can be resolved.

really, extraordinary effort! can't wait for 4.0.

one thing though, the options in the selection screen (support, economy, construction etc.) that are not currently selected are whited out, but the font behind it is also white. it makes it pretty damn hard to read. i guess for veterans that's no problem, but newcomers might be annoyed by it.

Yep, that's not intentional, it's just a porting artifact and is on our known issues list. :)
