The AVWW "redeem on Steam" thing has been kind of a fiasco in terms of how long it has taken, but as of a few weeks ago they were ready to go ahead with it and do the import.  My expectation is that both this expansion and AVWW will be redeemable on Steam, although hopefully that happens faster for the expansion than it has so far for AVWW.

Oh, we're definitely planning on the open-beta part, like usual :)

Just a bit later in the process, rather than from day-1 of development.  We've got to get some of the most-major features implemented fully first before we want a bunch of bug reports on them, anyhow.  With a certain mass of things all implemented, balance and so forth will be better able to be handled and we won't waste your time or ours.  But with that said, we should ideally still have over a month of public beta if we can at all help it, and so plenty of time for feedback.

This is the first expansion I'll get to watch being developed... now I have to figure out if I want to wait for it to be finished, or play all its iterations from the beginning of public beta... argh! :)

Sort of like the Unity port then? Instead of very early open alpha (which basically would of resulted in "can we start the game and see some of the stub elements for the main menu" for everything we could do without programmatic access for a long portion of the process. ;)), you waited a bit later until we could actually have enough to be a meaningful experience.

So, it's an expansion, and the details are darn slim at this interval.

Why wait? Let's try to guess what will be in it!

A feature guess: a secret research line at high cost that reveals a limited number of shadowed fast-travel gateways between planets. Kind of how in Star Control II, there was this secret green hyperspace that had a small number of shortcuts through the galactic arm. Now you can leapfrog around 16 planets and backstab the AI!

So, yep, a Super Secret Exo-Galactic Highway System! Courtesy the Ariloulaleelay. Definitely gonna happen.

Your turn: what ridiculous and untenable idea do you have that will surely be unveiled in this next expansion, and how hard is it for you to wait for it?

(Hey how about bringing back a minimap in the corner. You can make it shadowy if you want.)
