Pablo, I have actually a question about the music in AI War. I'm curious about the inspiration for it. What I'm used to seeing really in RTS is music that's all like "March onward" and "Take over the world" and "You will win". Like, high morale, a little catchy sort of music... but AI War music is ambient, emotional, relaxing in some cases... in a few rare cases, it even goes the direction of metal or the usual sort of high morale almost march-like music I referred to. Was there a particular key phrase or inspiration that led to the music, or was it always something like just whatever you happen to come up with is what it is?
In short: What lead to such a variety of music in AI War? I can see particular themes and connections and inspirations for AVWW and even for that Shattered Haven title song... but I find relaxing music in the face of a human apocalypse a bit of a curiosity. :)

I think you might be the first person to ask me this, so I appreciate the question! I first started writing the music to AI War in the bedroom of my tiny broke down apartment when I had just turned 22 years old. I had been out of college for a few months, had no money, was working as a bank teller during the day, and only had until about 10 pm every night to write the music (thanks to my annoying roommate who needed his beauty sleep and could hear everything through our paper thin walls). At this point I had my music composition degree, but had only taken one semester of electro-acoustic composition, so I basically had no idea what I was doing. My tools? A 2008 MacBook pro (which has now stepped down... RIP you wonderful machine!), and the free copy of GarageBand that came with it. I had never written music for a video game before, and my only real experience with video games were the classics (Zelda, Mario, Tetris, etc) as well as just having finished playing through Kingdom Hearts. You ask where my inspiration came from? A lot of it from the first Kingdom Hearts game. Hence the Final Fantasy-ish, mellow, emotional tracks of AI War.
The theme of the game is probably the 10th version (we went through a lot of them) and that was my attempt at the moving space battle orchestral music that often goes along with space games. Problem was, I had very limited resources with GarageBand, and that was the best I could do at the time. The rest of the original score was basically whatever I could come up with. I'd lie on my couch in the apartment trying to crunch ideas out, but the themes that stuck and made it to the final cuts came out of nowhere at random times. The "Thor", "Metal", and "Warp" themes came to me after watching the Tenacious D movie, the "Spike" theme came from looking at screen shots of 'Diablo' on google, the "Odyssey" theme came to me after my roommate whipped out his N64 and we spent an entire night playing Star Wars Pod Racer.

So, in reality I just wrote when I got really inspired (and at random moments). Once I started working for Arcen full time, and I could really methodically dedicate my time to the composition and not have to work on the music on GarageBand after a long day of work, I started growing a lot in my approach to the composition. I still am I think. I'm only 26 years old, and some of the people who have criticized my music are comparing it to works of people who have been in the field for years and are much older than me. My boss and good friend Chris is super supportive, and always reminds me that I'm only going to get better and better, and that is a good feeling.

Being a full time composer, I throw myself at my music with everything I have now. I have a few more years under my belt, I have much better gear to work with, and I'm actually going back to school at the end of September for a year to get my certificate in Audio Engineering. I'm doing night classes so I can continue to work during the day. But it's all for the love of music, for getting more experience in my field, and so I can continue cranking out goodies for you guys!

That is a very cool story. So, it turns out that Chris didn't give you the inspiration. I was wondering if it was something like "Well the game's quite tense, so there should be some quite relaxing music in it" or something.
What impresses me is your inspirations, like final fantasy for the mellow songs? It struck me as your own style, not as something inspired by Final Fantasy.  Although, Tenacious D inspiring Metal and Warp doesn't surprise me at all. :P

This is just like... such an amazing feeling, I'm sure. You weren't being compared to inexperienced composers. You were being critically compared to very well experienced composers. Imagine when you get as much experience as those guys do.

Keep up the great work. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of Ancient Shadows' soundtrack. 8)

...Addendum: While typing this post, the Light of the Spire title theme was playing in my head. Congratulations.

 In regards to the Final Fantasy stuff: I will say that a lot of the more emotional music is "my style". Growing up, I used to tinker around on the piano a lot and play similar music. However, the way Final Fantasy music inspired me is how it moves. It's liquid, always flowing. Much like natural emotion, it just rocks on and on. "My style" had some of that in it, but was a little more static, and lacked the fluidity that it needed to be effective. The Kingdom Hearts soundtrack is littered with beautiful music that moves, and isn't just pretty for the sake of being pretty. That's where it really impacted my composition style.

Might I inquire about the tools you use to make the music?

I use a variety of different programs. I have a Mac Pro that runs Logic Studio, ProTools 10, Izotope Iris, Melodyne Studio, and a bunch of patches that come with all of those. The main DAW software that I use for the composition is Logic Studio. It has a bunch of great midi instruments. I also import sounds from Iris, Garritan Symphony Orchestra, and occasionally sounds from Sibelius 7.

All the editing, mixing, mastering is done on ProTools 10.

I can definitely see the resemblence there, now that you mentioned it.
In fact... that's like, the most evil thing about your music. Normally when I'm like finished with music, I have to do something, I just turn off my MP3 player or close VLC or whatever and just go. But like... I can't interrupt most of your songs in the middle. It's like, first 5 seconds or never, because of how the songs move.

P.S.: That's not actually evil.

I stared at this for awhile, contemplating a decent response to the (amazing) music.

But I really can't get past the fact that the start to all of the songs for each race spells out "AIW".
Thought dominating to a little neurotic person like moi.

Haha, you're the first person to mention the AIW acrostic in the titles of the tracks. I'm sure other people have noticed it, but you're the first person to bring it up. Yep, that was on purpose!

I'm a bit passingly curious as to whether you'd share sheet music or something similar of your music. Some of it, like Neinzul Lullaby, make me want to like have an arrangement where I play guitar/organ, a friend plays piano, and a friend plays flute, and we all just play it together. At the same time I wouldn't know when we'd get around to something like that, so I just want to know if you actually kept anything like that around.

I also was listening to one of your songs fairly loudly with headphones and felt like I was going to get run over by a train coming from my left. Did you happen to do early work near some train tracks? XD Or, was it maybe on purpose? I think it was Cries of Zenith, but I know it was definitely one of the piano-focused songs. Either way, it's not a big deal or someone would have mentioned it sooner. It's just so subtle I didn't know it was part of the file I was listening to.

Edit: Oh, for when you see this, I do want to say I had a friend listen to only the title theme of AI War: Fleet Command, and I think she already loves your music. :P

I am deeply impressed with these songs. Most songs lose their appeal after listening to them a few times, but these... seem to get better every time they are played.

It has been said, and will be said again, but: Pablo Vega is awesome.
If warheads can't solve it, use more warheads.

Sounds great. AS has the best music of any AIW expansion, in my opinion.

Looking forward to the full soundtrack.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.
