How to fix lag!
« on: August 04, 2012, 05:45:55 am »
So the game has been a bit laggy for a while now. Especially if there's few thousand ships on screen at the same time (surprise herp a derp).

A while ago I found a way to fix this.

In-game press F1 multiple times to scroll trough all the ships. Non mark ships and MarkI-V. Go trough all of them multiple times by pressing F1 until all ships are loaded. When the game has loaded all the ships..
BOOM! Lag fixed!
Now there will be almost no lag even if there's 2k ships fighting on the screen. Zoomed in or out doesn't matter. Worked for me at least^^

If you close the game you will have to go trough the ships again. No big deal though.. takes about 5 seconds and makes game work perfectly.

EDIT: Ok I just got into a big fight. It doesn't completely remove the lag but it helps.

I've always found it odd how long a delay there is on going through the F1 menu the first time.

It's having to load a lot of textures off disk it hasn't needed up to that point, thus the delay.

Cycling through F1 can certainly have a "preloading" effect on big battles if you didn't already have all the actually-needed-in-that-battle textures already in memory, but it could also lead to RAM problems if you're already on the edge in some insane scenario.  On the other hand I haven't seen any memory crashes (iirc) since 5.051 came out, so things may be less critical there now.

So are you loading the full 3D frames/textures when you F1 through ships?  That seems overkill since you can't see those from the side bar.

None of them are 3D, but either way I don't know if it's loading the close-zoom textures at the same time.  I don't think it is.  I'm guessing Kahuna wasn't going to close zoom during these battles, largely because that tends to cause more lag (at least initially).

I know I certainly haven't had memory issues with the game since 5.048? The improvements in 5.051 are pretty good IMO. Large scale battles are a different beast all together though  :D

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.
