AI ships coming out of deep space?
« on: January 28, 2011, 08:05:20 pm »
Ok granted, I've barely touched the game while its been going through the beta as so many changes up and down the board (while good) overwhelmed me (dont get me wrong, i always boast about the amazing quality and attention of the developers of this game)

Now I'm just wondering what mechanic this is, if its intended, where AI ships are coming to the planet in a style similar to marauders or resistance groups.

They simply appear just on the very edge of the outer part of the playable area (outer ring on minimap) and come in from all sides including some from the warp holes as expected.

Attached are two pictures of whats going on.

Please explain to me if this is intended and if so, what it is I'm looking at. Thanks!

Sounds like a counterattack guard post or a warp jumper AI :)

See the right side of the first screenshot for the answer :)

Nothing in the description of that unit says i should be attacked on all sides. How is it that the military station is causing this?

Also, ai is vanilla and entrenched homeworld (takin it easy to ease back into the game after so many changes

Military command station shots randomly teleport what they hit.

Ah well that would explain it. I would humbly suggest adding that ability somewhere in the description as I simply had no clue that that was the cause. Also, upon further note, now it feels like the military outpost far out-strips the usefulness of the logistical orbital command seeing as they both have the same abilities with the military having much more useful applications, the only downside being a tiny decrease in resources

Yes, I'm sure it's one of approximately 200 things that should be mentioned in tooltips that aren't :)  Hopefully sufficiently little will change on a fundamental level for a while that we can catch up on those.

I find that very amusing as I've been listening to a litany of the opposite (that logistics is far superior to military) for months :)

Unless there are abilities in logistics that arent listed just like the teleporting shots in the military outpost. Is there anything I'm missing there?

Also thank you for clearing this up!

Logistics command stations half the enemies move speed on that planet, or at least the Mk. Is do. Not sure what extra bonuses the higher marks give.

Yeah well the problem is that the military post also does that exact same thing too. It also de-cloaks enemy units and apparently teleports them randomly arround. It also boosts the attack power of friendly units.

Logistics only does the speed adjustments.

logistic (friendly speed + / enemy speed -)

military (friendly speed + / enemy speed - / attacks / teleports enemies / boosts friendly attack power)

So Again, unless I'm missing something, I dont see how logistic is viewed to be better.

The speed changes are much more substantial for the logistics station than for the command station. The friendly + and enemy - you're seeing for the military stations is the standard multiplier for all command stations (econ gets those too) whereas the logistics stations get significant bonuses for friendlies and minuses for enemies beyond that.

I'm more than a little surprised that 5.0 shipped without those information boxes being updated, this question has popped up constantly through the betas and assuming LotS sells well and brings people to/back to the game we're going to get flooded with it in short order.

Yeah again i guess thats the case. they both state double friendly speed and half enemy speed. Some attention needs to be given to the info boxes soon id say, especially with this being officially launched now (by the way, to clarify, I've been around since the 2.0 days)

Logistical stations also help with (guess what ;)) logistics.  Moving your ships around on "highways" of logistical stations is a welcome blessing.  also makes it a lot harder for a swarm of AI ships to simply rip through a bunch of lightly defended systems before your fleet arrives.  While military is good, it has its limits of what it can defend against so I think people view logistical stations better because they have better end-game benefits.

However I view them all equally.  All have their +s and -s and it would be a mistake to ignore either station.  Economics are good too so don't forget them.  I hear the warp jammer is nice, but I never have used one yet.  Although on some of these multi-wormhole-maps I do I might start using them...

Do logistics give a speed boost beyond that of the rest of the command stations? I know they give a speed nerf to enemies beyond the standard "on non-friendly planet" speed nerf all units get.

Ever since the speed mechanics were changed, I could never figure that out.
