About tutorials

There has been some threads about the tutorials being bad and about someone being unable to complete them.

I made a new thread for this because I don't want to aim this response to anyone specific.

I really don't understand what's wrong with the tutorials so could someone help me understand by providing exact details of the troublesome parts/situations.

The tutorials cover all the basics in the game and completing the objects is really easy. It tells you what you're supposed to do so all you have to do is read and do as it says. It tells you what to do and how to do it.

I'd not like to be disrespectful but I do wonder how were you able to buy AI War in the first place if you're unable to read. Because that's what it sounds like to me: being unable to read. Because the tutorial tells you what to do and how to do it. So if you are unable to complete the objectives it either means you're unable to read or you simply chose not to read.

Scouting
Objective: Select the scout.
How to: Left click it.


Objective: Zoom all the way out.
How to: -Scroll.
-Try pressing Q, W, E and R.
-Try pressing Page Up and Page Down.


Objective: Move the scout on top of the Barkboom wormhole
How to: Select the scout and right click on top of the Barkboom wormhole


Objective: Scout Barkboom.
How to: -Select the scout and hold CTRL while right clicking the Barkboom wormhole.
-Or select the scout and go to the Galaxy Map and right click Barkboom.



If you still feel like the tutorials are absolutely overwhelming you can use these videos as mental exercises to prepares yourself psychologically for the challenge:

A lot of people choose not to enjoy/learn games that require that much reading.  There are certainly times where I don't have enough mental energy left for such things myself.  So it's probably often a mismatch of level-of-complexity with a person's interests (at the time, anyway).

But even if someone does all the tutorials and gets them, there's still a phase of "ok, now you're going to die a lot" that most players encounter if they try to get serious about playing the game.  For some people, that's glorious fun.  For others, it might feel like they weren't adequately prepared by the tutorials.

I don't want to sound harsh, Keith, but that's what they should have excepted. The game istelf advertises as "different and difficult" and a lot of reviews state that the game is very hard to learn and understand.
AI War is a hardcore strategy game and while everyone can buy and try it not everyone is suited for it.
At least this means more sales if the people don't think twice before buying XD

Well the most recent failure case was accidentally going through a wormhole and not knowing how to get back. Does the tutorial cover that? (If not, it should)

Also note that some of the other threads about this involved game bugs.

I think Keith's pretty much got it.

I can't tell you how many times I've started the game, thinking, "I'm gonna move some space ships around and shoot stuff! I'm gonna really get into it this time!" and then ALT-F4 the damned thing after 30 seconds because it dawns on me how much of a commitment the game represents. And I love AI War! But holy heck sometimes my poor brains.

But then again he didn't do as the tutorial told him to do.
Also I don't understand how he couldn't get back trough the wormhole. I mean if I press button A and then B happens.. then I realize that button A does B. So he could have done the same thing to get trough the wormhole again.

It really does sound like he was just smacking buttons with his forehead.

Or possibly the player in question accidentially hit another button than the one he thought he hit due to his hand or keyboard being placed slightly different than usual. Have you ever experienced something like typing "kist" instead of "just" because one hand was slightly off?

The tutorial should at least be able to guide a new player back to where he is "supposed" to be and/or lock out functionality that would take him away from a screen/planet he is "supposed" to look at.

As a newbie, I can definitely agree to this.  I've been pretty good at not being too save-scummy, but the few times I've gone back and reloaded are when I think "Oh, that's really simple.  I'll just go and quickly do it", do something without putting too much thought or effort into it, and subsequently get absolutely pummeled.  Usually involving parasites.
