Ground battle?
« on: April 27, 2010, 06:24:12 pm »
Will there ever ever ever be a battle that takes place on the planet itself instead of flying? Either using the game mechanics or combining them both, making every 80 planet campaign 500 hour +

Just want to know if like in  a year will just might happen?

Originally my design for the game did call for this. I was inspired by star wars: empire at war. However, I later realized just how confusing this would be visually to keep track of. And when it comes to rendering planet surfaces they then need a ton of graphics, more pathfinding algorthms, all sorts of stuff. I still find the idea neat in concept, and I was sorry to have to cut that, but I can't forsee ever adding that in to this game because of all the drawbacks noted. If I ever do a tbs strategy game it would be terrestrial, though.

On the other side...how about making Solar Systems instead of Planets and being able to bombard planets and send in troop transports...There doesn't need to be any fancy ground battle...just some explosions and what so ever...We could conquer planets this way and claim them for us. This would be a like in the old 4x games where you would just send troops in and bombard a planet to finaly claim it and maybe discover some ancient tech or added production bonus if lucky  ;D Would be worth for an expansion imho  ;D

I'm not sure why people are under the impression that I want to completely change AI War to be like various other games that already exist, to be honest.  AI War, at core, is what it is and I'm interested in expanding that... but what you're describing there is pretty much an entirely different game, right?  I mean, if you take away the way that planets work, and the way that you move between them, etc, then that takes away most of this game.  And if you take that away, then the AI has to be entirely recoded in various ways, etc, too.  It's always good to make suggestions, and I don't take offense to it or anything, but I do find it a bit curious how some suggestions are essentially total conversions, which I'm not planning on doing any of.

*haha* right you are...this would be somehow a total conversion. Maybe i got sidetracked because AI War reminds me of older games where i had the same amount of fun when playing them.

It's hard to make suggestions that expand the game without changing it in some way. Suppose i have to try and learn in which direction suggestions should go  ;D

Well, the goal of all changes are definitely to change the game in terms of making it larger and better and more complex/fun/etc.  Adding on whole other layers of new stuff to do is great, too, but generally reserved for actually happening during expansions.  But, when it comes to completely reinventing core concepts, that's pretty much where I draw the line. ;)

*chuckles* Something of the opposite of what good ol Malfador did yet equally awesome...

XD Must say though, your games thus far are tremendously easier to grasp on a basic level(yet enormously deep). Meaning I can actually find players to rope into MP XD

... I can't wait to one day see you do a TBS. You do realize you have to some day now right xD? Maybe after 1-3 AI wars expansions xD...?
It's just. I can't get the concept of a somewhat HoM&M styled game with ridiculous overkill done by ya out of my mind now XD
... with laser sharks...
... and mecha horses...
... and carrots of doom...

... okay... stopping now... back to my Japanese homework...
It's a secret. Xellos, The Mysterious Priest

Many thanks!  It will probably be a few years from now, as for the time being I'm definitely focused on AI War, and then just other genres.  But I'm definitely looking forward to doing something turn-based in the future.  Maybe sort of a hybrid tactical/grand-strategic affair with full multiplayer support.  Sort of Final Fantasy Tactics meets Civilization or something. :)
