A Few Miscellaneous Questions
« on: August 18, 2011, 11:43:13 pm »
Well, more questions from me. There are a few things that have been bugging me for quite a while, as well as some things that just happened, so I thought I'd ask here.

1: Most ships uncloak when they attack, but Riot Starships (I'm using cloaker starships to cloak them) are able to attack while cloaked, and the AI Ships just swirl around in confusion. I suspect this is because the Modules are counted as separate from the ship itself but the AI are incapable of targeting them without the ship being uncloaked.

2: I don't know if this is already known, but warhead interceptors show that they do not increase AIP when destroying missiles but it happens anyways.

3: Just out of curiosity, why are cloak starships not counted as military? I now know that you can use ctrl+click to select them too, but for a while this threw me off.

4: Random question 1: The armored Golem seems to be a reference to the Ohmu from the old movie Nausicaa: Of the Valley of the Wind. It looks similar, is incredibly well armored in a similar fashion and from the wiki the cheat to spawn them is "Ohm" so it seems to be.

5: Also random question, why is the icon for AI War a Botnet Golem? Not really relevant to anything, I was just wondering.
This is what I'm referring to, by the way.

I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

To the questions:

1. Yep, that's been reported before.  Are you on the latest beta?  I thought that one had been fixed, but maybe it's hanging around out there.  You're right that it's the modules causing the difference.

2. Last I saw, I don't think warhead interceptors are actually even killing ships.  I think they're inert at the moment.

3. They don't have any guns, so the auto selection logic misses them.

4. Yup, you got it. :)

5. It's a pretty ship, and it reduces well while still looking nice.  That's really the only criteria I used.

Yes, I'm on the latest beta. The riots don't do much as their guns aren't the most effective, but it is fun to see the AI run around and wonder what's shooting at them. :P

And the warhead interceptors do seem to be killing the warheads, if that's what you mean. Anyways, thanks for the fast response!

Yeah, that's still something we need to fix, then. :)

The real reason for this is that Chris is trying to aggravate us all to death. :P Just try using a cloaker or a scout starship to provide your fleet with some cover. Oh you warped into the planet but you left scout evade on, now your scout starship is on the edge of the world and your fleet is getting sniped to bits. Or you get the cloaker in place but you forgot to power down your ships. Now they're all running around shooting at things and you've lost your cloak cover. Or you got them in place, powered down, but you tried to move and forgot to ctrl+select. Now your fleet happily moves right out of cloak/anti-sniper cover. Or you did select them all correctly, but you forgot to group move... etc. etc. It's one of the most micro intensive things you can do in the game, and forgetting any little detail makes it all fall apart. So I always end up with a pile of cloakers and scout starships gathering dust on my homeworld. I always build them, but I never end up using them because it drives me batty.

There's a question I've been wanting to ask, so I may as well ask here: do AI difficulty levels affect seeding of planet mark levels?

I'm trying a game against a special forces captain and warp jammer, both level 9.  Nearly every single planet on the map is level iii or iv, and they get reinforcements ridiculously quickly.

On the plus side, I've discovered that Spire Maws are amazing.

Yep, they do! The percentage of the higher level planets goes up with the difficulty level.

I'll use this thread to ask another question. I captured a Hive Golem and repaired it, but I am unable to move it and it doesn't generate ships at all. Is this because The planet is destroyed? (I'm playing against Scorched Earth).
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Did it activate, meaning it is replaced by a Hive Golem, Instead of being a broken hive golem? If you lack the energy required to run it, it will not activate.

Ah, I believe you're right, It is a low-energy problem. Scorched Earth is tough to play against, especially on a 10-planet map. So few planets to get generators on.

Okay, new question time. I didn't think this was exactly thread-worthy.

I wasn't doing anything, when suddenly I get a message that I think read something about a deep strike on planet Dimune. So I go to the map, and somehow, despite full fog of war being on, I can see the owner/mark level as if one of my ships had been there. It's 6 hops away from my nearest base, none of the other planets on the way there have been revealed. Is this just a glitch, or did something happen that I'm unaware of?

Sounds like a bug to me, I don't know of any mechanic that should trigger that. I think that if you send your ships far enough into enemy territory, it sets off a deep strike effect that starts increasing the AI progress, but this does not seem directly related. What minor factions do you have enabled?

I have Human Resistance, Colony Rebellions, Zenith Miners, and Hard Broken Golems. The Threat Level increased to 900 something, and only 600 of that is on explored planets.

I am not an expert, but I think that if Allied ships give scount intel, and you had human resistance (unlikely I think, as I am pretty sure they only appear if you are on the planet) ships or the Colonies on that planet, and any of them gave scout intel, it could cause this. I am not sure however. If you have autosaving enabled, if you post the save from before this event, it may be possible to reproduce and fix. (assuming the RNG seed is saved)

Are you sure it isn't a colony rebellion?
It's just carriers all the way down!
