Try something new today!
« on: April 04, 2010, 05:34:46 pm »
I challenge you to start a game of AI war and build or use something that you've never (or, if you've used everything (doubt it), rarely) used before.

I just used transports for the first time.  They're... incredibly amazing, I think I'll be getting them more often.  amazing against superfortresses, since my fleet stays alive to get within shooting range of the superfort.

Go try something out, and tell us what you think of it!

I've been doing that lately, one who is "a bat out of hell".

Still I find a lot of units useless or some other unit is more proficient at doing something, most noticeably with the startup ship choice.

Though, when a ship performs a specialized role that isn't too specific, it usually turns out to be quite useful!

Transports are, to put it bluntly, made of win.

They go fast; they got 4 million hitpoints, AND good shielding; they'll get your fleet from A to B both faster and healthier than you would without them; you can scout anything with them (scouts on a transport!); couple them with slow, heavy-hitting units like tanks, and you got a roaring avalanche of death...

Basically, full of win.

And yeah, I'm playing my first game with the ZR expansion right now, so plenty of new, shiny things  ;D

I tried spider drones today.  They were... meh.  They'd be great at stopping enemies from getting to shooting range, if they shot further and if the shot traveled faster.  Unfortunately, by the time the spider drone shots land, the enemy's already in-range.  Only truly shines in retreats.

Spiders work much better defensively than offensively. This is especially so when you're dealing with a lot of units immune to tractor beams. Units immune to tractors tend to be quick ones as well (eg Raiders, Impulse Reaction Emitters), so spiders work great on them.

...That gave me an idea for a new AI type...

Oh god that would be scary.

Should make an AI type that spam transports and the old blue-pill colony ships until the whole screen is a mess--yes, that would be most pleasurable.  Players shall learn defeat from asphyxiation.
