4.0 Is Awesome! A Few Questions, Though...
« on: October 30, 2010, 05:58:40 pm »
I just downloaded 4.0 and love it. Definitely a huge improvement.

However, a few questions (possibly bugs?):
1) On each planet, one or two of the AI Guardians seem to be blank grey boxes. I used steam to download 4.0 and then updated to the latest in-game after that, but it didn't seem to go away.
2) It's incredibly hard to see the range of turrets I'm placing now. The color is so similar to the background color that I just can't see the circle like before. Are others seeing this, or is it only me?
3) How can I move stars on the galaxy map like before? The context menu doesn't seem to be available on the galaxy map screen anymore.
4) I tried "don't show entire galaxy map" and like it, but I do find it's really hard to scout manually, because I can't see all the links I know about on the galaxy map screen. I wish when I scouted a planet, the galaxy map would show all outgoing links, and I could send a scout to one of the outgoing links, even though I hadn't explored the planet at the end of that link.

Should I file bugs for #1, #2, and #4, or is there something I'm missing?

Yea, 4.021 was supposed to fix that but some of the image files got missed again ;)

Depends, what's your player color? :)

We haven't reimplemented most of the context menu, as that came after the last official release and wasn't ready for "prime time" by the time we had to start cutting scope for 4.0.

Before you send a scout, you don't know where the other links go, but you can use the "unexplored wormholes" galaxy display mode to see where you can "branch out"

1 is a bug but we know about it, I'm not sure what's going on with 2, and 4 is working as designed :)

Just as an additional question, rather than a new thread:  The game lists 202 achievements, however Steam lists 178 - are the Steam community ones going to get updated with the new ones (From CoN?) - if they are, will they auto-update on-load like in 3.x ??

OK, I feel happy with the answers for #1 & 2 (works great if my color isn't black :-D), and I understand #3 will likely come back later on.

However, #4, I'm not sure. I tried the "unexplored wormholes" galaxy display mode, but it doesn't seem to make any difference at all with the options I'm playing with (maybe it's the "don't show unexplored planets" option I have enabled?).

Well, the unexplored wormholes display only does something when don't-show-unexplored-planets is on, otherwise all wormholes are counted as explored :)

Ah, I see it now. It doesn't show them for the homeworld, I think that's why I was confused. After exploring a few planets, I do see unexplored counts, so that does help a lot.

However, this still makes it difficult to scout manually. What I want is to be able to tell my scouts "go explore links starting from this enemy planet", or something like that. Right now I can only do that by actually looking at the planet and looking around manually to find all the wormholes, and right-click on them. Is there an easier way?

I'm too lazy to keep zooming into enemy planets and looking for the wormholes, so I guess it's automatic scouting unless someone knows a better way :-P

Any chance this feature makes come back? If yes, then when (appx) this can be expected?

I miss dragable planets too. I'm sure they will return after the major bugs from the 4.0 release are dead. Show stoppers have to come before features. ;)

Well, it isn't exactly that, but if you select your scouts, open the context menu (which defaults to alt+right-click; I generally just bind it to a single key I don't use for other stuff to avoid needing to click for it), and click "Auto Explore", they'll spread out and go for the unexplored wormholes.  Not maximally efficient by far, but saves time.

Do you have particular showstoppers in mind?  I'm aware of the various OSX stability issues (which still seem to be affecting a minority, based on the number of copies sold for OSX and the number of actual complaints), eraser's mouse-scrolling issue (which seems to affect only him), a report from yesterday where an individual's mouse clicking was basically not working at all... and actually that's all that comes to mind right now.

There's also stuff like the human rebellion colonies not letting you build ships properly, etc, that we're trying to get to very soon, but I wouldn't rank them at that level severity.

Hasn't stopped me from adding the odd strange feature here and there when I was taking a break ;)

I have no real show stoppers atm - I've been playing a little and working on the AI wiki a bit. I was just saying that once the crash bugs are worked out there would be more time for "features" I can also appreciate the need for breaks -- recreation = re_create  ;)
