Can attrition emitters be captured?
« on: November 11, 2009, 11:00:08 am »

Attrition emitters have the tag "3x waves while humans hold" but not the ownership transfer on planet capture one, so I'm curious.

Wow, these were supposed to be capturable, but they were not.  Good catch!  They will be in the next prerelease.

Hooray!  I've run into one for the first time today, and they're nasty.  Good to know that one day the red glow will serve ME...!

I've played against them a time or two, and never decided that 3x waves would be worth doing a bit of damage to the wave while its on my planet(plus the extra cost of clearing the planet while the attrition emitter is alive).  Any chance of reducing the penalty so there actually a reason to capture it?

Agree on that the 3x waves penalty is too strong to keep it. From the few times that I've encountered it I wasn't that impressed with it: I can see its value for the AI in defense, as it damages your fleet which you will have to repair as your fleet is expensive to replace. For the human it does not have that much value, as AI ships tend not to survive encounters and waves are free for the AI.

BTW: Do attritters attrit twice as fast on F&D

I decided to take away the bonus to waves in general, as, thinking about it, I think these are less useful than ion cannons, which have no penalty.  They don't do double damage in F&D mode.  I had to check the code to be sure.

I have yet to encounter one, unfortunately.  Ion Cannons to me however, are a relative annoyance (mainly taking out my engines and annihalating my T1).

B-but no fear!  Colony Ships are here!
I'd take a sea worm any time over a hundred emotionless spinning carriers.

The main way to encounter them is to pick the hard ai type that has them on every planet it owns :).

Its still almost impossible to capture an attrition emitters (mainly due to the fact that your units auto attack it, and if you don't clear the wormhole/guard post it placed at, it dies as soon as you capture it).  Any chance of adding it to the list of objects that you have to tell your units to attack(like ion cannons).

Awesome idea, that will be in J.  Definitely an oversight on my part.

well, you could optionally just make them ultra-useful depending on how the starmap looks
for example catching one would make it hard for the AI to penetrate on that side
but i dont know, maybe too much of a chance it will ever be found in a good spot
maybe make it movable? and keep it as it is without the 3x waves?
