Not Exactly a technical Request as such... (Looking for info)

Hello I'm new to the forum.
Found Arcen games while browsing stardock's impulse driven website, To be perfectly honest never herd of arcen or the AI War before today.

Now this may already have been posted or i could have missed the link entirely, its late.
I was looking for an about button on the home page. I was looking to know who / what is arcen games.
Would be also cool to take a look at the credits of AI War. Maybe some background info on the founder(s)or arcen.

Its now occurring to me that this is probably a rather unusual request.
I'm really just interested in the people behind the games and the development studio.

Any information would be awesome.

You can view Arcen Games' About page here -> http://www.arcengames.com/about.php. There's also link to it at the top right of the Home Page in the About Arcen Games section.

If you download a Trial of the game you can view the credits in the scrolling text box on the Main Menu.

Don't worry, that's not an unusual request at all, we hope you enjoy AI War. :)

Hey there, welcome to the forums!

Our About Us page has a lot of information.

There are also other tidbits in the two interviews (1, 2) and the one podcast I did in our articles section of the forum.

The various other articles give a lot of insight into how various parts of the game were developed, etc.  And if you check out our Press & Player Reactions page, you can see what other people have been thinking about the game.  There are also a number of threads in the forums here with players talking about their experiences.

Hope that helps, if there's something else you'd like to know that I have not covered elsewhere, ask away!  I'm pretty open about most stuff like this.

I cant believe I missed that link.
Very interesting reading. Thanks for the info.
It was good reading up on the backgrounds of the team.
Downloading trial now.

Probably end up buying the game I'm a big RTS fan.

Been browsing the articles section. Some really good reads.
Specially on the comparison of rendering engines that led to your decision to use SlimDX.

I had never herd of it before, I would have hope I had.
My experience is only with VB and C++ which is probably why I have only stuck to DirectX, OpenGL and OGLes and middleware like Gamebryo.

I have a few other questions.
Are you using any middleware for you networking layer.
What's next for arcen games?
Do you see the companies staff numbers growing in the near future?

We don't use any middleware.  The network layer is .NET-based TCP sockets coded by yours truly.  I was originally using a network package for C# that I forget the name of now, but due to some threadlocking problems I decided to go with the current approach, which is event-driven rather than looping.  That has other ancillary benefits, too.

Next for us is a puzzle game called Feedback, to hopefully be out late this year (we have not released many details on it yet, it is just passing the prototype phase basically), and then the first expansion for AI War around that same time period.  The full list of planned stuff is on the right-hand sidebar of the main site, there are other games planned or in progress, but we're a small team and there's a lot of stuff going into improving the base game of AI War and adding free DLC, etc, so that may affect our schedule some.

I don't see the team for Arcen growing much anytime soon, but you never know -- I did not expect to bring on a techwriter/forum moderator, but it was totally worth it.  None of us are fulltime staff members of Arcen at this stage, it's a part time thing for everyone.  AI War is finally getting more press and getting noticed, and sales have been steadily rising for a few months now, but it's still not at the stage where anyone can quit the day job.  There are a few exciting things in the works that will hopefully change that by year's end, though.

The company does not really have a physical location, per se.  I was a big fan of virtual offices even before I founded Arcen, so I don't expect to ever have office space.  Myself and the composer are located near Raleigh, NC in the US, and the game designer for feedback is in Seattle.  Then our artist is up in Canada, and the techwriter is in the UK.  So we're pretty much all over the place!

RakNet is a good consideration for networking, there pretty nice to indie developers.
Not sure if its compatible with c# should be with the libraries.
But its nice having your hands nice and dirty in the code doing it yourself.

Its really great to hear passionate developers emerging into the industry, it needs more.
Mainly because in 8 months time I will be applying for a job within the industry, Currently in my second year of Game Development Programming stream. Its good to know that more companies are out getting a name for themselves. Specially when you hear stories of so many companies going under.

I'm from New Zealand myself, other side of the world. Can't imagine what its like being on a team that's not in the same room. Must be interesting.

Its 4 am here I'm off to bed.
Good luck with AI war and hopefully many more games to come.
I'll be hanging around the forum no doubt, specially as I'm now really considering buying this game. Looks amazing.
