What DLC to start with?
« on: August 31, 2014, 09:52:16 pm »
Hi I just bought the game and I really want to dig into it, but I dont want to pass up any good stuff.  I notice there are several DLC. I bought the AI War: Fleet Command  2014 Bundle which has all of the DLC.  I dont know where to start, or should I just begin with the regular "vanilla" campaing.  Thanks guys.

If you don't know how to play, do the tutorial first.

Think of the expansions as all being cooking ingredients by which the game comes up with a unique meal every time for the player. The more ingredients, the more variety, the more varied opportunities to win, so on and so forth. You get more to work with but so does the AI. I like not knowing what's going to happen when I start the game.

I personally like them all but here is what I would enable and why:

Enable: Zenith, because this has a lot of the ships and toys you need (including the trader). It also has golems. And a bunch of other stuff that never went obsolete.
Neinzul, because they make for entertaining battles and some fun candy technology.
Spire, because it offers another way to win, a story mode that you might find entertaining, and some epic battles.
Destroyer of worlds, because planetcracker and the alternate way of winning.

Planetcracker. Believe it.

The Zenith Remnant contains a lot of superweapons, for both you and the AI.  Many of these AI superweapons can be captured by taking the entire planet.  I'd probably refuse to play the game without The Zenith Remnant.

Children of Neinzul doesn't contain much Fun that can't be turned off in the lobby.  That said it's always nice to have some variety in your Fun and I usually have all the Neinzul minor factions set to 1/10 - the Neninzul minor factions in particular are great at adding variety to a game without being too painful.  There's also hybrids.  They are easily manageable, but a campaign with hybrids is a slower, more defensive game.

The Champion is the main feature in Ancient Shadows.  Ignoring champions the feature list is fairly small.  The Tackle Drone Launcher and the Wrath Lance are two of the most !!fun!! things in the game, but there's a lobby toggle specifically for the former and you might not ever actually see the latter because AI Homeworld.

Vengeance of the Machine is focused almost entirely on !!fun!!  Might be best to skip for your first game, save some surprises for later once you're familiar with it.

I'd definitely set aside Light of the Spire for later as well.

Destroyer of Worlds, sure why not.  Once again set aside the Exodian Blade campaign for later and destroy the AI homeworlds the normal way.  Ignoring Exodian Blade this doesn't add much, but what it does add includes some hilarious stuff.  In particular, the Cowardly and the Mime AI types both sound very entertaining to go up against and I'd love to play a game against them.  The preemption plot adds a degree of low-level chaos that a lot of people will enjoy.

TL;DL
Enable Zenith Remanent, Children of Neinzul, Ancient Shadows, Destroyer of Worlds
Disable Light of the Spire and Vengeance of the Machine.

This sounds so vast.  Wow Cyborg and Alex Heartnet.  I wasn´t expecting such a detailed answer from you guys.   Hmm I am going to try out two different campaings with the expansions you guys suggested.   Last night I got ubberly owned but I loved it!  And yes I noticed I get different stuff to play with and I love randomness.    ;D       I'm so noob at this , you guys must be pros, and I cant wait to get pro. >D
