Hosting Co-op AI War with VMWare
« on: January 23, 2010, 02:38:29 am »
Hello!
I am playing AI War in a Windows XP guest in VMware Workstation 7 on a Slackware host.
It works ok considering, however, it doesn't seem that I can host a game that others can connect to.
As far as I can tell I have UDP forwarding set in my nat.conf. ok and I don't have any other problems with my network.
So, I am probably missing something obvious but just to make sure I wondered if anyone else has had any unusual problems with this, or is it 'just working as it should' for anyone - in which case I probably have a typo in a conf somewhere..
Thanks in advance.
dM

<edit> I suppose I should point out that it works ok bridged with the port forwarded from my router directly to the VM. It is the weirdness of the fact that my preferred choice of doing it with a linux host standard vmnet8 type NAT is for some reason not working with AI War.... <edit>

Hmm, I really don't know enough about VMWare to be able to say what the issue is.  AI War itself simply sets up using a single UDP port, and assuming that everything is forwarded to it properly that should work fine with VMWare or otherwise.  Sorry I can't be of more help!

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, there is no problem from the AI War side It is definitely an issue with my VMWare NAT UDP forwarding setup.
As VMWare is the only way at the moment (that I know of) to run AI War without installing Windows on a boot drive, I figured that there must be people out there who have got hosting from within a VM using NAT working and also I might not be the only one with this issue.
I thought I would start a thread about it in the Tech Support section by posting my experience of a technical difficulty I am having with it.
When I figure out where I am going wrong then I will post the details here.
It is working fine with bridging, which is ok because I have access to the router to forward the port.

Sure, no worries -- I knew why you were posting. I know that some others are using ai war on vmware, but the ones I know of  are playing solo.
