Lockup on quit (?!) with v4.021 [Steam]
« on: November 02, 2010, 11:09:08 am »
OK - so, love the game.  Haven't played it enough to be any good ... but still love it.

What I've got:
Steam version 4.021 - with Zenith Remnant installed
Toshiba Portege tablet PC running windows XP with service pack 3

What I'm seeing:
Game starts, runs the Steam background application, and appears to run just fine.  I play for a while, then quit.  The program freezes on quit.  I can move my mouse around and (if I keep my antivirus on) get to the task manager and end the application manually but AI War will not shut down on its own.

BTW - I am logged in as an administrator.

What I've tried (without success ):
-looked for an error log in the aiwar directory under steam apps - nothing seen
-looked for (and found) my settings.dat file.
-uninstall/reinstall (I admit, only to the extent that Steam deleted my old pre 4.x version and replaced it with 4.021)
-running the game in a window vice full screen
-quitting from the main menu or quitting directly from the game - no difference, still freezes
-adding AIWar.exe, the auto-updater, and the contents of my aiwar and steam directories to my antivirus exception list (no change)
-turning off the relevant portions of my anti-virus software (AVG 11 won't let you turn off the virus checking and spyware portions).  All this seems to cause is an inability to alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del out to the task manager and force quit the game.
-leaving the software in whatever state it was in after the "quit" button on the main menu is pressed for ~8 hours (overnight) to see if it was just being slow.  No change (well...except to increment my "time played" on Steam by about eight hours).

Has anyone seen this before?  My old installation never did this which makes me think maybe the new engine and my tablet PC don't get along.  Any other ideas?

Thanks as always for a great game!  I should point out that I don't think that this ... interaction (I can't even call it a bug) is game-breaking.  Just annoying.  Though, of course, any assistance would be appreciated!

Hmm, that is really odd -- thanks for the kind words, by the way, and glad you're enjoying the game so well!  But this is definitely a new one on me.  I don't know of any reason that a tablet pc should do this.  To be clear, are you hitting Exit to OS or are you using Quit Game?  You might try the former if you're not.

I also wonder if Alt+F4 would kill the program for you without all the extra hoopla.  Not that that is ideal, but I haven't seen this before, and it's tough to diagnose something you can't duplicate -- I'm assuming it's some sort of external interaction with other software, same as you.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the prompt reply!  Yeah...this is wierd.  That's why I was thinking it might be my anti-virus stopping AIWar from doing something that it needed to.

So - I did try both the "quit to OS" buttons and the "quit" button on the menu.  Both locked it up.
BUT
Alt-F4 worked!!  I was shocked and feel mildly silly.  I never even thought of trying it.  But it works like a champ!

If anyone else sees this or has a thought on fixing the problem, please let me know but, as far as I'm concerned right now, Alt-F4 is a fine work around.

Thanks!

That's really odd -- but glad there's a workaround that is simple, at least!
