New Desync
« on: May 10, 2014, 02:17:46 am »
Here is the third desync we hit this game...

Actually, Vigilo will need to post the save files.

Basically, we sent some youngling commandos into a core world to scout. Shortly after both the strategic reserve being spawned and we both tried to order the commandos out of the planet (and failing due to a black hole machine), we got the desync.

This desync seems reproducible. Just send youngling commandos to scout a core world in the back and bam, desync. I already took the other core world beside it but unfortunately, you may need to take it again if you load the autosave. Just sabotage the eye on the first core world and dont kill any capturable buildings.

The desync did not happen immediately upon entering the system. I paused the very second the younglings entered the system for scout info. I then tell them to go back but I can not because there is a blackhole. I hit unpause, the strategic reserve spawns and desync. I also clicking on the wormhole trying to fruitlessly leave it immediately before the desync. We also had very unusual and horrible lab upon loading the attached autosave. I am confident this is reproducible.

And again, this time sending the whole fleet to the AI homeworld.

Strategic reserve related?

Desync again. Man, we are so good at discovering these desyncs.

And a third time; notable here because it happened from a cross planet attack.

A desync happened again and it has always involved triggering the strategic reserve except this time, the CPA pulled ships from the reserve. Who said decyncs are hard to track down? There is only one way to end this game now. Start the showdown!!!!!!!

Wow, you guys are on fire :)  Will take a look today.

Thanks for the specific info on what triggered it, reproducible is a good thing.

Ok, I've tried loading that first autosave and playing around from there; I did manage to get one desync but when I reloaded and did the same thing again it didn't reproduce.  To actually nail it I need it to happen every time (or at least often enough that it doesn't take me days to retest).  In my last test it ran all the way from when I loaded, through a full two-stage assault of that first core world, to just past the deploying of the CPA with no problems before I just stopped it to look for a more fruitful angle.

I'll try some of the more specific things you mentioned above, but thus far none are actually reproducing desyncs (the one I got came the same instant I destroyed a mass driver, for some reason, though the same thing the next time didn't).

We did put youngling commandos into the core world with the black hole for scout info and before the reserve spawned; I was smashing the get out button hoping the youngling commandos would intuitively act like scouts. I was controlling my ally's commandos. I clicked the wormhole like 8 times. A split second later, the reserve spawns, desync. Then every other reserve spawn resulted in a desync. Also, we did not kill the OMD or any capturable structures on the core world. We turned it into a scrap producing world with that raid engine next door. It happens OMD plus ion cannon mark IV turn into a mean scrap making machine.

Also, can we make it possible to move the OMD from the worst spawn locations ever? This could of been the best anti galactic control ship planet ever except it is next to the homeworld wormhole. The second the galactic control ship comes, oneshot.

Ok, I was able to get a reproducible case.  One trick, btw, is to let it run with frequent autosaves (I just did 1 per minute) and not touch it: if it gets from a save point to a desync with no human interaction at all then it's more likely to do it again from that same save point with no human interaction.

For 7.025:

* Fixed the recently-introduced mechanic of "excess reinforcement strength lost to caps goes fills the Strategic Reserve and/or augments waves" to not cause desyncs.  Sorry :)

After that I wasn't able to get any more desyncs out of that game.

Many thanks! :)

The RNG is incorrigible, I'm afraid.

If you want OMDs setup just-so you'll need to get them from the trader.

I think the super weapons in general skew the game balance. If that planet did not have the super weapons, we would of without a second thought killed the core raid engine. But man, that planet is fueling the production of other super weapons in the game with the insane salvage. On the other hand, it was extremely dangerous as we bruteforced the OMD/eye and faced the real possibility of a fleet wipe. The eye was very easy to solve with a hack and it lasted only 60 seconds.
