How do you set waypoints?

How do you tell a ship to go to point X, then attack object Y, then retreat to point Z? I would really like to be able to do this. If this is impossible, I would like to know just how to go to point x then to point z. Thanks in advance.

easiest way for me to do this is to:
Pause
click on point X
HOLD Shift, click on object Y, click on at Z
Release Shift
Resume game

As you add waypoints you get travel lines laid out to see the planned path you put in
