Startup Crash
« on: September 10, 2010, 05:10:52 pm »
Hi, I recently downloaded the demo to see how the game would run on my laptop, but when I try to run it the game crashes and it generates this

-----------------------------------CurrentDomain_UnhandledException-----------------------------------System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
   at SlimDX.Direct3D9.Font.Build(Device device, Int32 height, Int32 width, FontWeight weight, Int32 mipLevels, Boolean italic, CharacterSet characterSet, Precision outputPrecision, FontQuality quality, PitchAndFamily pitchAndFamily, String faceName)
   at SlimDX.Direct3D9.Font..ctor(Device device, Int32 height, Int32 width, FontWeight weight, Int32 mipLevels, Boolean italic, CharacterSet characterSet, Precision outputPrecision, FontQuality quality, PitchAndFamily pitchAndFamily, String faceName)
   at AIWar.Direct3DRenderer.InitFont(Boolean IsForLobby, Font F) in C:\vcprojs\AIWar\Framework\Direct3DRenderer.cs:line 316

   at AIWar.GameForm..ctor() in C:\vcprojs\AIWar\GameForm.cs:line 510
   at AIWar.Program.Main() in C:\vcprojs\AIWar\Program.cs:line 20

I tried having a look to see if anyone else had got the same report, but couldn't find anything. I tried reinstalling the slimDX in case I had the wrong one but that doesn't seem to have made any difference. So any help resolving this problem would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hmm.  Yea, there was one other report of the same (I think) at http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php?topic=6358.new but I don't think we ever actually found the cause.

Good news is that we're currently porting the game to the Unity3D engine and should be having a public prerelease of that in a week or two; of course that will likely have its own bugs due to the fresh port, but the official release (which will be stable) is scheduled for mid-October or so.

Anyway, Unity3D means no more SlimDX or GDI+ and such issues.

It's possible in this case that some important font is missing; I've seen a report of that in the past where (iirc) installing the right fonts fixed it, but I don't think that would be an issue at the current version.  Oh, that does bring up a good point, which version did you download?  Or, at least, which url did you get it from?

Thanks for getting back to me about it, sorry to double up on similar issues. The link I used to download it was http://www.moddb.com/downloads/ai-war-fleet-command-v3120-installer which I thought was the most recent, but I could easily be wrong. I guess I'll just hang on in there for the new version.

Thanks for your help.

3.120 is the most recent official version.  The beta releases go up to 3.189 but I don't think we made any changes that would impact your situation.  Sorry about the crashes, we will do our best to solve it one way or another :)
