Spire Penetrators don't seem to attack at their range.
« on: September 04, 2014, 11:24:30 pm »
When I use a Spire Penetrator, it seems to want to get up close and personal before attacking. With the fact that they're meant for long range hit and run tactics, this kind of defeats their purpose, as they don't use their massive range to stay safe then hop back to a friendly system to rest. And yes, I had scouts on the planets in question.

Did you check to see if whatever you were shooting at had Radar Dampening?  Some Guardposts, Fortress, etc, have a minimum targetable range, and the Penetrator will advance into that range when told to attack.

Just double checked; no radar dampening. And even so, they weren't attacking at half their range, it was more like they were attacking at Raid Ship range. And mind you, this has happened every time that I tried to attack with them, not only against certain targets.

EDIT: Seems to have fixed itself now... Odd. I'll see if I can't reproduce it.

This is a somewhat more general issue, though it is far more of an issue for stealthy, hit and run type ships.

It seems to be more likely to happen when there is more lag, as that is when the game starts taking some "shortcuts" to try to keep lag from becoming overwhelming, but sometimes leads to ships overshooting their mark (including getting closer than they need to be to attack, as in this case)
