[Solved] WI Installer Package
« on: September 05, 2009, 02:06:24 am »
Hey,

Due to my current internet configuration I don't have an active internet connection, so I use this laptop along with a USB drive for downloading demos and such. So anyways, that means I couldn't download any of the packages from my desktop. So that means I'm playing the game without the WI package that I was supposed to download. Is that important? So far, I haven't had any issues at all.

Thanks,
 Tankor Smash

That won't affect gameplay, it would just potentially cause either 1) installation, or 2) patching to fail in the middle of its work.  If that happens to you, then you can just download Windows Installer 4.0 from one of these links and run it on your machine:

Windows XP 32-bit
http://www.arcengames.com/dl/Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu

Windows XP 64-bit
http://www.arcengames.com/dl/WindowsServer2003-KB942288-v4-x64.exe

Vista 32-bit
http://www.arcengames.com/dl/Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu

Vista 64-bit
http://www.arcengames.com/dl/WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

If I recall, I think Windows 7 already has what it needs.  And if you have been keeping up to date with Windows Updates (which I doubt if this has no internet connection, but I should note it anyway), you'll also already have this.

This doesn't affect the actual game in the slightest, in any case, it's just related to the installer and patcher.  So if you already have the game installed, and you are patching from the zip file anyway, then this is really pointless for you in particular.

Good question!

Oh sweet. Thanks. I had a hunch it may have been that, but I wasn't sure.

On a similar note. I have windows XP x64, and when I attempted to automatically patch the game, it would fail.

I did not have a problem getting and using the zipped update, but I believe the issue I had was caused by the 64 bit nature of my operating system. I will install another copy of 1.013 and attempt to replicate this issue in a few minutes. I am sure I will be able to replicate it.

The 64bit OS actually doesn't matter, we have a lot of players on 64bit OSes (although good guess -- if I were you, that would have been my first thought, too; but AI War is very well tested on 64bit OSes).  Generally speaking this issue means that either you don't have WI 4.0 installed, or it means that the original MSI file from your installation folder has been cleaned up, either by you or by an automated process on the OS.  Generally, just running the original installer but then exiting out from the first page of the wizard will solve that (since the installer unpacks the MSI file into the appropriate location as a very first step).

Ah, alright then. I have never yet encountered a game that was well tested on x64 systems. It usually is the first cause of my problems these days  :)

Oh, it's no surprise -- the 64bit OSes are still kind of new.  But all through our alpha we had one of our testers on a 64bit Vista version, one on 32bit Vista, and two on 32bit XP.  So most of the problems (and there were quite a few) were ironed out long before beta even came around.  Just getting music working right was initially a challenge, incidentally, and there were a number of performance problems on 64bit that we later solved by doing a different kind of build.  Interesting stuff.
