[Solved] Trying to update with Impulse
« on: January 15, 2010, 10:45:20 pm »
Hello.

I read your FAQ for troubles applying the latest patches, and while it mentioned that the Update button is disabled for the Impulse release, it isn't. In fact, this morning I let it updating to v3.0.0.1 through the game interface, and it was downloading. I had to leave, and when I came back, nothing had happened. The downloading window wasn't available anymore, and if I tried again, it said I had to wait until the "Please wait" message wasn't displaying anymore, but such message was not visible anywhere!

I quit, and then ran the game again. Now it also indicates a beta version 3.0.1.1.

What should I do? Download the update (v3.0.0.1) and be always-vigilant as to what happens with it, or wait for Impulse to update it? I'm an Impulse first-timer, so I don't know how to make it update a game...

Thank you very much for your support.

PS: I also have the expansion, and already validated it. Just bought the game yesterday on Impulse.

Personally I bought it through impulse, but just dled it from here(and got my key from impulse to enter into the program after installing).  That way it was much easier to apply the patches in the past(and might still be :)).

With the new updater, it is now much simpler to use both our updater and Impulse.  I am not sure why the updater would fail -- I suppose that could happen in Windows XP if the folder is write-protected.  In Vista/7 it asks you for admin access so that it can basically do a UAC rights escalation and then do the update without windows blocking it.  But if you've got an unusual amount of security turned on on that folder in XP, that can cause some issues; granting yourself write access to the AI War folder would fix it.

Other than that, maybe it died during screensaver or something.  It should still be in your temp folder most likely (if it failed to apply), which would mean you would not have to wait on the download a second time -- probably -- if you try it again.

If you are on impulse, they will keep you up to date with both official updates and expansion updates, so you can choose to ignore those and just get them through impulse if you want.  For the beta updates, impulse won't have those until they turn official.  So if you want those early, feel free to download them through our updater and you'll have them.

Hope that helps!

You're totally right, the updater works as intended.

Remember I told you I had to leave and came back after a while? Well, in Windows 7 (which is what I have; I don't know about Vista), UAC warnings have a time-out, which means the confirmation-to-run window will be visible only for some minutes, after which it will cancel itself. I reran the updater, and it again detected that there was a new version (v3.0.0.1). I proceeded to choose it, and this time it didn't need to download it, it just applied it, with no (apparent) issues. :)

I noticed two things, though:

  • The update was 95 MB. Almost the whole size of the expansion. Well, I'm new to the game, so I don't know what really changed from version to version, and since the release notes didn't update (I don't find any 3001.txt file), I'm even more lost.
  • The game version message in the top-left corner of the screen keeps indicating v3.0.0.0.

I guess that's all.

Thank you very much for your support!

My pleasure, glad that worked out!  And thanks for the info about UAC timeouts, I did not know that.  I'm running Win7 myself, but had not ever left a UAC prompt long enough to know it would disappear.

The update was indeed the full expansion, it's a long story on that but you shouldn't have that again.

For the version in the top left, that is correct the overall version is 3.011, but each expansion's content also has a version number.  That way there can be a lot of game logic/base game updates without having that confuse the expansion content updates, which should be comparably very rare.
