[Solved] Unable to Connect
« on: August 31, 2009, 06:23:43 pm »
Me and a friend are using trial versions of the game (although I did try with a full version just to try).  We cannot see each other's servers on hamachi, and direct connect with my IP address does not work, despite having forwarded the proper port.

We are at a loss to explain this, because I hosted a Killing Floor game on hamachi yesterday, and even created all the proper exceptions in the Win7 firewall.

I have already purchased a copy of the game, and intend to for my friend if we can get it working networked.

Thanks for all the help.

Thanks for the support!  Sorry to hear about your issues here.

Usually when you can't connect, it's going to be a firewall issue of some sort.  You should be able to connect over Hamachi by using the direct IP there if it doesn't auto-detect.  With the port forwarding, please make sure that you are forwarding TCP; if you are just forwarding UDP, that won't work.

Also, please verify that both you and your friend are using the same port -- if one of you changed the port setting, that would explain the problem.

Finally, you should check your various firewall programs (including the Windows Firewall, even if you have other firewall software that can still be on), and make sure that AI War (the program) is allowed access, and/or that the AI War port is open.

One of those things should do it!

Hey, nice to see you here, Chris.  Talked to Jason Emery about this game the other day (Tyrian's developer), he had not realized Danc had given permission to use his art in "for pay" games, and shot him off an email to ask about it.  I just assumed you contacted him.   ;D

Anyway, I only have windows firewall on, and then only so i can see if one of my programs tries to access the net (that firewall is not really a sturdy device) i forwarded both UDP and TCP before I read that the game only uses TCP.  Does my friend also need to forward?  Also, we did directly connect to each other's hamachi IP's.  I forgot to mention that we used direct connect for that as well.

Thanks for the quick response.  I think I'll go ahead and buy his copy now, I'm sure we'll get this sorted out.

Yeah, Danc is pretty amazing about that.  Apparently Jason emailed Danc, and Danc emailed me and seemed pretty pleased with the game; I think this is the sort of thing he had been hoping to happen when he made them free.  AI War definitely wouldn't have been the same without his contribution!  I had emailed Danc about this back in May, actually, but I guess that email didn't get through the spam trap or whatever.  So it was cool to hear from him now.

Only the host needs the port forwarded, so your friend should be fine.  I wonder if your friend has some sort of firewall on, the fact that you cannot connect directly through Hamachi is mighty surprising.  There's got to be some other sort of software blocking this, one way or another.  There are a lot of people playing co-op for the moment, and I haven't heard of any other issues with them.

Thanks for the quick response.  I think I'll go ahead and buy his copy now, I'm sure we'll get this sorted out.

Thanks for your support!  Glad you're enjoying the game.

Hmm.  Well, it is odd that AI War would be blocked but yet I have had no other issues with other games.  Is it perhaps an issue that could be caused by having both the trial and the full version installed (to different places on the computer?)  That does seem doubtful to me, and I also restarted my computer, as well as made sure hamachi is the first network adapter used by games (although I assume AI Wars enumerates all adapters when looking).  We'll try again with both computers running the full version.

At least you aren't as arrogant as the guy who designed X-Plane, who insists that it is perfect, there are no bugs in it, and any problem is your fault (TM).  I found one the first time i played, the game failed to self terminate properly, and then would launch successfully because it was still using the same network port (or was it resourse)

Glad I assisted you and Danc getting in contact.  It is always a good thing 8)

I checked the port, and when I ran AI Wars, it did in fact open (as viewed by http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ ) so as far as that goes, I am good.  Theoretically that satisfies any problems that should be existing.  He is installing the game now.  If it works, you can expect news momentarily.

Edit: Got it to work.  I'll have to put up a review on Ranting Gamer if i get around to it before.

In a bit of oddity, my friend's newly built vampires did absolutely nothing to a fighter attacking his space docks.  Kind of just sat there and looked at it.  Got a few other observations, but i'll get those to you later.

No, I'm quite open to criticism, and I'm well aware that everything in the game isn't perfect.  Just look at the suggestions forums!  But in this case, the only way I could think of that the game wouldn't give some sort of better error message is if something else is blocking it.

Definitely -- thanks!

Great!  Out of curiosity, what was the resolution?  Something on the other computer? It would be helpful for me to know in case this comes up again for someone else.

That's always much appreciated, as well. :)

This is actually a known bug in 1.013 that is fixed in the 1.201 prereleases.  Cutlasses have the same problem.  You can get the latest 1.201 prerelease off the main AI War forum here if you want, or you can wait until tomorrow when the official 1.201 release comes out.  Thanks for the note!
