[Solved] 2.001V Unplayable
« on: December 18, 2009, 08:10:33 am »
Hi,

I downloaded the 2.0 trial from one of the links on the main site which installed fine. Because there seemed to be a lot of fixes and changes since 2.0, I immediately patched to 2.001V and disabled the expansion.

Unfortunately my very first experience of the game is of it being completely unplayable due to severe delays in responding to mouse clicks, scrolling etc. in the tutorial!

As the font was changed in 2.001V, I tried 2.001U - same result.

OK, I tried the trial Zenith Remnant expansion tutorial and it was smooth as silk. Untick the expansion - molasses again.

Hitting F3 shows over 2 seconds Render delay.

I uninstalled, and noticed a file left behind in the install folder which was some sort of fault diagnosis? It was ... 200 MB!

After deleting the folder and reinstalling, I tried the vanilla 2.0 install and it plays fine. After patching with 2.001V and unticking the expansion, it's severe delays again.

My system consists of WinXP Pro (32bit) (SP3), E8400 dual core 3GHz, 2 GB RAM, 4GB page file, 8800GT graphics card, so no slouch.

The delay isn't constant, it happens regularly every few seconds. If I scroll, I have to leave the mouse at the edge of the screen for 2 seconds, then it'll scroll. It'll scroll smoothly, then after a couple of seconds it starts juddering.... loop.

Any ideas please? It's completely disappointed me after reading such glowing reviews and I haven't been able to get as far as Tutorial #1!

P.S. I just tried again today with 2.001W. Same sad story. Also, I notice that if you hit Escape from the tutorial, there is about a 2 second delay in responding to mouse clicks on the settings tabs e.g. clicking on the Audio or Graphics tab.

There's no noticeable delay when not having a game active.

P.P.S

I've narrowed this down to just the first 3 tutorials. The Intermediate tutorial - apart from the first 5 seconds or so - and a normal hosted game seem to play fine. Very little delay indeed there.

TIA

What applications run in the background? It sounds like something is interfering from the outside...

Update to W just to be sure, but i see no such delay so tis very odd.

1) Check what apps run in the background
2) Update Chipset (Mainboard) drivers and Graphic Drivers

This is a very odd issue for sure...

Hi HalfLoaf,

Great catch with this, this is a bug in the latest few prerelease versions, going back to at least U but possibly as far back as R or S.  The important thing to remember about these prerelease versions is that they are beta, and so from time to time you'll run into issues with them -- usually not something this severe, but it does happen.  Part of why we do the prereleases in between our official releases is so that the community can help us find and iron out bugs and glitches, as well as offering their feedback (and getting early access to) the new features.  This is the sort of bug you'd hopefully never see in a fully-tested official release from us (like 2.0), but it's the sort of thing that can crop up with beta code, given the nature of beta code.

Anyway, the problem here was the LocalizationMissingErrors.txt file (the 200MB file you were seeing), which was filling up and causing severe latency when the expansion was disabled.  I was able to duplicate this on my machine, and the latest prerelease now fixes it: http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,2642.0.html

Thanks for reporting it, and sorry about the bad first impression!  That's one of the challenges that having public betas creates for us -- someone might start with a not-fully-tested version of the game and have a bad first experience -- but the feedback that we get from having these public betas (and the attendant improvement in quality this creates for our official versions) is generally well worth it.  Hope you enjoy the game, now that you're able to actually try it out fully!

Hi x4000,

Wow, spot on!

I've been reading these forums for a while now and constantly amazed by not only the speed of response but just how pin point accurate you are in your solutions! :D

Yes, I can confirm that after installing 2.001X... trumpet fanfare; No more lag!

Can finally try it out.

Thank you very much.
