[Solved] Filefront Download Broken?

I've downloaded version 1.005 from filefront but get a bad cab error near the end of the install.  It recurs if I hit retry and it rolls back if I hit ignore.

The .0.9.4 versions from the other sites fail on upgrading.

For both of these, the issue is almost certainly that you don't have Windows Installer 4.5:  http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/details.aspx?FamilyID=5a58b56f-60b6-4412-95b9-54d056d6f9f4&displaylang=en  This is a free update from Microsoft.

Sorry about this!  I'm talking with the people at Advanced Installer about this, but I don't expect to hear anything more back from them until Monday at the earliest.  Earlier versions of their software didn't work with the patching for some people pre-WI4.5 (as you see), and then around 1.003 or so we updated to their latest version (that came out around the same time), and then now it's giving us this corruption issue with some people pre-WI4.5

It's very strange, since it does not seem to affect all people pre-WI4.5, but it's pretty frustrating for us here at Arcen since it's reflecting rather poorly on us when it does happen.  The WI4.5 update is small and should solve your problem, but we're trying to find an approach that will allow us to fix this without user intervention...

Hi X4000.......I downloaded the trial from filefront last night and am experiencing the same problem as sypher.  I have installed, and reinstalled the Windows Installer 4.5 but to no avail.   Any other ideas?  Anything I missed?  I would really like to give you game a shot!

Hi there, you are the first person I've encountered for whom the WI4.5 fix didn't do it.  What sort of message, exactly, are you getting?  Is it the disk1.cab file is corrupt message?  You could always download and install the version from CNET if you want (http://download.cnet.com/AI-War-Fleet-Command/3000-7483_4-10915432.html), and then use the in-game Check For Updates button to upgrade.

But this is very curious if the installer is not working for you even with WI4.5 installed.  What version of windows are you running, is it 32 or 64 bit, and what service pack is it on?  It's possible that your add/remove programs is just messed up in general (this happened to one of my alpha testers), but in that case any MSI-based programs would not install on your machine.  If this is localized to just the AI War install, that's probably not the issue.

Thanks for the quick response.....yep, it is the disk1.cab error.  I am currently downloading the CNET version and will let you know what happens.

I am running Windows XP Service Pack 3 (32 bit).  Would you like me to send you my dxdiag?

Hmm, that's really strange -- thanks for the added info, though.  I'll be interested to hear what happens with the CNET version, hopefully that one will work fine.  I don't think the dxdiag would help in this case, just because it doesn't include installation-related info on it (but thanks for the offer).  I've been talking with the Advanced Installer folks about this, and hopefully when I officially release 1.006 tomorrow, that issue will be resolved.  In the meantime, I imagine that the CNET version will at least be installable.  Let me know if that doesn't work!

Well, some good news......The CNET download worked like a charm.  Also, I was able to download the update to 1.05 without a hitch as well.  I am not quite sure what the problem was with the filefront download, but I now have a working copy of the game.  I'm off to give it a try!

For investigative purposes, let me know if you need any other detailed info about my specs.  I am always more than willing to help an up and coming indie developer.

Thanks, Aaron!  I'm so glad to hear that worked.  Hopefully the 1.006 installer will do better for people in general.  I'll let you know if the Advanced Installer folks need any more info, right now I think they are doing cross comparisons on their own machines.  Something changed in their most recent software version, and I think that's part of the issue here (hence why our older installers are working for people).

Anyway, glad to hear that's working now, and thanks again for your interest in the game!

Hi!

I had the same problem with the FileFront download. I was running Vista SP1, and the installer failed with the cab error. I installed the updated installer, but it still failed with the same error; then I updated to Vista SP2 and it failed the same way.

I was able to download the version from CNET and use the in-game updater fine, though!

I just thought I'd add another data point. Sorry about your troubles with the installer - I'm sure it's really frustrating.

Hi there, welcome to the forums and thanks for the added info!  You're right, this is hugely frustrating, and I just heard back from the Advanced Installer folks and they are also mostly at a loss.  I'm going to put out a 1.006 package soon (today or tomorrow), and hopefully that will resolve whatever the issue is (and it will also include the WI4.5 as a prerequisite that it will install for people, to prevent the issues with the version not being up to date).  Thanks again!
