Installing AI War on a thumb drive
« on: May 12, 2010, 01:35:44 pm »
I have AI War 1.013 installed to a thumb drive.  I'd like to add The Zenith Remnant to the drive as well.  When I start 1.013 and click on "Check for Updates," I'm prompted to update to 3.000 but receive a "wrong file size" error message when I try to update.  I DLed the 3.120 trial version and now have an icon on the thumb drive for "AIWarSetup.exe" (file size 108,733 KB).

However, I'm still getting the error message when trying to update using the original AIWar.exe.  If I click on the AIWarSet.exe (the 3.120 version), I get the Setup Wizard, which offers to install to either the computer's hard drive (C:) or any of nine different network drives to which the computer is mapped.   It does not, however, offer an option to install to the thumb drive (the thumb drive, by the way, shows 462 MB used and 6.99 GB available).

Any ideas as to how I can get AI War 3.00 (or later) installed on a thumb drive?

I would suggest simply installing it to your hard drive, then copying it over.  Alternatively, just download this zip file of the raw AI War files for 3.120: http://www.arcengames.com/share/AIWar3120Full.zip

And then just unzip that into your thumb drive directory, and you should be good to go!

Ah, obviously I've become too used to programs that play with the registry when they install.  Copying to the thumb drive worked wonderfully.  Thanks for the help.

You bet!  We intentionally don't muck with the registry because we like to have many installs on one machine, etc.  A lot of players have a copy of the game that is on the latest official, and a second copy on the latest beta, etc.  Personally, I think I have five copies on my one machine -- the latest beta that I play with, the latest still-being-programmed copy, the latest official, the latest Steam, and the latest Impulse.  Heh.

Somewhat related to this: I recently bought a new laptop and I want to install Ai war on it since I plan on getting rid of my old computer. Could I use that file to transfer the game since steam is playing up on me?

Absolutely. You can just copy your existing folder from the other computer to the new computer, too. If you want your saves, settings, etc, then copy the save folder and settings.dat at the least.
