Question about installing multiple copies of AI War
« on: June 24, 2010, 05:08:37 pm »
I'm curious if it is possible to install more then 1 copy of the game, in a different file location, and it be it's own separate entity?  I just bought the game for a friend of mine and plan to have him play on my computer, while I install my steam copy over onto my wife's new rocket ship of a computer for when we get together and LAN.  Will achievements get confused or messed up due to this, and will there be any save or resource issues?

Sure, you can install it as many times as you want on a machine.  Though, I recommend not using the installer except for the first install, that part would get confused.  But AI War doesn't use the registry in any way (everything is in settings.dat, right in your AIWar folder, from your license key to your settings to your achievements and high scores).  So just copy the AIWar folder to a second location on the machine, and you're good to go.

Or, if you use the installer for one copy, and Steam or Impulse for another, then that also works just as well.  Personally, I have half a dozen copies on my machine.  And a lot of people use multiple copies so that they can have one on the official release, and another on the latest beta, or similar.

Thanks for your support, and let us know if there are any other questions!

You bet!  And, yeah, it was designed to be easily portable either for multiple copies, or copies off of thumb drives, etc. I always loved that about Unreal Tournament back in the day, and wanted that ever since in my stuff.

Hmm, thought I could ask this here as well, nearly same thing:

I upgraded from Windows Xp 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit; but now I need to get my Ai War working on Windows 7. Problem is, how can I find out my license anymore? Is copying settings.dat enough to do it after installing game(as you told that should have the information)?

At least copying game outright did not work and gave an error; haven't updated it in ages though.

EDIT: oh, no steam here at all.

Yes, just moving your settings.dat file to the new computer/os would do it. The reason the game would die after you copy it is simply that the prerequisites are not there. On windows 7, that simply means the slimdx runtime, most likely, which you can download from the sticky in this forum.

Hope that helps!

Oh, sure, of course.  The unity versions don't use the registry any more than the SlimDX ones did, so all you have to do is copy the files from one folder to another.... and voila, you have two installs.  The installer itself won't let you install twice, but that's always been the case.

Ok... so ran into new problem now. After noticing that auto-updater did not work anymore (had a while since I played last time) I downloaded full package. But now I am stuck with trial-mode again, copying settings.dat did not help.

Release notes of my old version go all the way back to 3.010 (I think?), has something happened since then? EDIT: Regarding the license, that is.  ::)

In any case, I have my old version stored in safe...

EDIT: It seems that something has changed at least; my old Ai War folder does not have RunTimeData folder at all, which has at least settings.dat inside it with some other information, does my license get lost somewhere in the process of creating this or something?

If you installed the newest betas, 3.9xx or 3.7xx, then you need to use the settings importer to get your old settings.  The settings files between the two aren't compatible.

Theoretical here: Say you didn't buy the Steam version (where you can easily get your keys) but off the website and lost (or deleted) the license emails. Is there a way to recover your keys?
