Constant CTD
« on: December 09, 2010, 12:22:26 am »
I'm tying to find a crash log but I can't seem to. For whatever reason, the game keeps randomly crashing on me. Can't really seem to figure out a pattern, other than maybe when I Tab out to the galaxy view a lot, but it's crashing so frequently I can't seem to play any farther. I'm looking for an error log now but I can't seem to find any... Wonderfully helpful I know :P I've attached the save anyway, in case you want to examine it.

What does it do when it crashes?  The game just disappears?  Or does an error message pop up?

Try looking in your RuntimeData folder for any error logs, that's where they would be.  There is one known crash with the current beta when you have your engineers getting shot on enemy planets, that can sometimes cause a crash.  That's fixed for the next version, which I'll put out in the morning.

Yeah, checked there. Absolutely nothing in that folder error log wise. My Engineers getting shot could be the case since it does happen when the Neinzul wave shows up, but that's not an enemy planet, it's under my control. And no, no error messages or anything, it just hangs for a second and then I'm looking at my desktop.

Hmmm... well, hopefully the next beta will fix that, but you might try looking in AIWar_Data and seeing what output.log has in it.  However, that gets overwritten every time you start the game, and often doesn't have crash data itself, so that may not be of too much help.  But right after you have such a crash, it might have something interesting if you post it... maybe.

I just remembered, but last time I had an issue and I wasn't getting crash logs was because I wasn't running the game in Administrator mode, and Windows 7 likes to be all paranoid about ANYTHING writing to the C drive, so if the patch doesn't fix it I'll try running it as an administrator and see if my crash log writes itself.

If your permissions aren't correct on your game folder (as in, you not having write access to that folder, which you should), then anytime it tries to log anything it would instead just die.  So that could be an answer to it, actually.

I think that Windows 7 also does some sort of funky "virtual drive" copy where it writes stuff sometimes in situations like that -- it's very odd.  So it may be logging them after all, just in some funky "shadow" folder somewhere unexpected.

Yeah, that's what I mean. It's got write permission, and I am the Administrator, it's just Windows 7 likes to not write things directly to the C drive. I had this problem before when I reported the Stats screen causing a CTD and wasn't getting an error log from it.

Well whatever you fixed seems to have worked anyway. I've played past the point where it crashed before and it's working. I think it had to do with the Engineer thing you mentioned, only it seems to have been affecting friendly planets too. But whatever, it works now. On a side note I should probably set it to always run in Administrator mode so I actually have crash logs next time ;D
