Frequent Hanging 7.001 on Mac Via Steam
« on: July 21, 2013, 08:34:43 am »
I have had several hangs in the game lately whereas it ran perfectly in 7.000 and before.

Hanging happens often when untangling maps or getting new map seeds, and one time also when I clicked Quit from the main screen. I have to Force Quit to leave the game. I've left it running some 10 minutes to see if it was just a temporary thing but it wasn't.

Running on:

MacbookPro 15" 2012 Retina
I7 2.7 Ghz Quad Core
nVidia GT650M, 1 GB
16 GB Ram
Mountain Lion 10.8.4

That's really odd. For mapgen itself I could see it somehow being an infnite loop for some map types, but unless you're using a maptype that you didn't use before 7.001 I don't think that explains a sudden increase.  For untangling the algorithm as a whole could be unbounded (were it not for the hard limit on the number of iterations) but since it updates the display after each iteration (and the iterations are tightly bounded) that wouldn't be a "hang" per se.

And not sure what's up with the quit button doing it, but various errors on-quit seem to happen in certain games on certain systems with no particular rhyme or reason.

Are there any actual hangs in-game, btw?

I'm rather new to the game so I'm using the Beginner script, and leaving the map on Simple. In fact I've left everything at default.

The hangs happen on clicking New Seed, and clicking Untangle a second time to stop the untangling process. Can't quite recall if it happened ever on the initial Untangle when you click to start the process.

And just now it once again hanged on Quit.

No hangs in game yet.

Was I just lucky that it didn't hang once prior to 7.001? Seems..unlikely, as I was generating map seeds and untangling like mad then, even more so than now, just to see what it would do.

Edit:

Some additional info:

It seems that the Quit hang occurs each time I play the game - as opposed to just putter around with settings in the "start screen area." It will hang within the game if I use the Exit to Operating System option, and will hang from the Start screen if I leave a game and go there instead of directly exiting to the Operating System. Just on the odd chance, I disabled all add-ons (VOTM, etc) and it still happens. So it's something clearly a result of a change that was introduced to 7.001 over 7.000.

Testing to see if I could get rid of the hanging problem by updating to the latest beta, but it didn't fix the hanging as described in my earlier posts. Dang, it's annoying. I can't leave he game at all any more ugh out Force-Quitting.

Hello,

I am getting the same issue - I am on a MB (older white version) 10.6.8.

I am just playing the tutorial and every time I quit, I just get the rainbow pinwheel spinning and spinning.

The only workaround I have found is to play in fullscreen, when I want to quit, I go to windowed, and then I force quit by right clicking on the icon.

If I quit in full screen I have to hard reboot my computer.

Any help would be appreciated as this is impacting my  continued playing of this game, which seems pretty interesting.
