no idea what's causing extremely bad performance in multiplayer
« on: September 17, 2011, 08:03:20 am »
a few days ago i played a game with a friend of mine, when we suddenly had a desync (already put it on mantis). And now I started a new multiplayer game with some1 else through Hamachi and the performance is very bad, even at extremely low. Which i find odd, since it was running fine on high in the other game till we had the desync.
did the desync screw something up perhaps? Just started that new game and can barely even move scouts. everything has a 3-4 second delay. I played a game with that guy before and it was running fine back then, so it can't be our systems.
I'll post a save, in case that might be useful. Hope you guys know what's going on here.
I'll be playing my solo game in the meantime I guess :P to many problems with online games lol.
thanks in advance.

A desync can't break anything long term.  Most likely either your new playing partner's computer can't handle it (not likely, since extremely low didn't help), or your connection to them is really bad.

Check out the stickied tips on improving networking performance.  Probably network skip is in order, and would solve this fine.  However, if you are playing over hamachi and have a yellow connection dot on it, that's the problem -- routing through hamachi's servers is extremely slow.

Hope that helps!

I see, that must be why. Guess I'll just play with that friend of mine, since everything seems to work fine with him.

Normally when you use hamachi it does not route through their servers, to clarify. That's when you have a green dot next to each other's names. When you have a yellow dot, that's because a direct connection could not be made and so hamachi uses it's servers as the middle man. Which is great, except it adds enormous lag for games.

Latency problems can be worked around with network skip, though -- even if someone is on really terrible dsl you can get it playing in realtime or nearly so, it's just that "radio lag" between when you give ships an order and when they carry it out then goes up a lot.
