Looks like it's thinking the game is being run from the "'c:\program files\steam\" directory when it's actually supposed to be run from "'c:\program files\Steam\steamapps\common\ai war fleet command\".

It's very strange that it would do that; if you navigate to c:\program files\Steam\steamapps\common\ai war fleet command\ in windows explorer (not internet explorer) and run AIWar.exe, what happens?

My computer freaked out about 3 months ago and i now have a prompt every time i open anything for open with, and i have had to find it in a browse list in that function, i probably just need to wipe my computer and start over, its old anyway. Anyways, when i go to that location in windows explorer and open aiwars.exe it does that same prompt routine and i have to find aiwars.exe in the folder in that browse function, and then launch it that way, the same thing happens. I'm sure it is my screwed up computer, do you have any other ideas, or whats goin on with my laptop? sorry for being complicated and i hope at least some of that makes sense

Ouch, yea, that sounds like a heavily hosed computer.  At least it explains the problem you're having, and why I wasn't used to seeing it.

When you say "now have a prompt every time i open anything for open with" do you mean that it prompts you for the program to open the game with?  And you pick Steam, I'm guessing?  And the error message is exactly the same as running it from within steam?  How do you open steam, anyhow? ;)

If so, you can theoretically "fix" the problem by copying the contents of "c:\program files\Steam\steamapps\common\ai war fleet command\" into "c:\program files\steam\" and run it the same way you are now.  But that sounds like a rather bad idea in terms of dirtying up your steam directory.

But a much better thing is to fix your computer's problem of not knowing how to open an exe file.  Here's a couple links I found by googling "double clicking exe brings up open with dialog" :

http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.html (this one actually has a program to fix the problem, and it was recommended on another site so is likely legit; but I don't konw that for sure)

http://www.askvg.com/solution-exe-files-always-open-with-notepad-or-other-applications/ (this describes the actual registry fixes that the above-mentioned program actually does).

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-41261-can-t-open-exe-applications (more of the same, mentions boot sector virus as possible cause)

I imagine those would fix the open with problem.  But you may want to check for viruses (HijackThis is good for getting info, and there are various forums where people will look at HT logs and tell you if/what is wrong).  If you are infected it's probably best to rebuild the machine from bare metal if that's feasible.

(If I could give karma on this forum, I would Keith.  :))

Enjoy the game, Lorloc!

Glad it worked out, and very glad you like the game :)

Keep an eye on that machine, it might get increasingly cantankerous.
