Kaspersky?
« on: October 29, 2010, 11:43:04 pm »
Is there a known problem with Kaspersky? If so, what's the solution? (other than shutting down my anti-virus/firewall security) I just bought and downloaded the entire AI Wars catalog from Steam and can't run the game.  I CTD when loading and receive a "Get thread Context failed" error report.

I'm running on an i7 with win7 64-bit and an ATI card.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums :)  Sorry to hear about the troubles.

Yes, there is a known issue with Kapersky causing that "Get thread Context failed" error.  I should post a sticky on this tech-support forum about that.  Our other game also had a known issue with Kapersky of another kind, odd how that happens.

Anyway, I know at least one of our players has had success with starting AI War in Admin mode while Kapersky is running.  Could you give that a try?  Obviously we don't want our games to require admin mode to run, but we don't have control over what AV software does, etc.

Running in admin mode is the first thing I tried...no joy. Am I to assume there is no solution to this problem?

I'm not aware of a solution, no, since the interaction is between Kapersky and Unity (the engine we're running the game on) on a Win7-64bit environment, and we couldn't stop it if we tried.  It appears that Kapersky has fixed the bug in their 2011 version, though:

(the pertinent info is in the last comment of that thread)

To be clear, if you desire a refund we can work that out somehow (process differs depending on where you bought it, not sure how Steam handles it).  But if you could try with Kapersky 2011 (or are you already running that?), I'd appreciate it.

Bought game from impulse a while back only started having the same issue after the 4.0 update. I'm running win 7 64bit with kaspersky.

Here is what i have done to fix the issue.
Go to the directory you have installed AI War. If youve steam version should be in steam/steamapps/common/aiwar. then go to the folder called "runtimedata". Open a file called settings.dat (use notepad or some such and set string "AutomaticallyCheckForUpdates:" to o) save and exit.
I have not had any problems with "Get thread Context failed" error since.

Hope it helps.

Oh, thank you, that is very good information :)

Makes sense, since the auto-check connects to the internet, and the job of a good AV package is to say "no soup for you!".  It appears that Kapersky 2010 was just being a tad too enthusiastic about that task ;)

Of course, we don't want folks to have to turn off the auto-check-for-updates; as I imagine the same bug would interfere with trying to get the update at all.  Also, we have very frequent updates and don't want folks to miss out on those.  Having to mess with the settings.dat to get it to work isn't nice either.  But glad there is some workaround.  Hopefully it works in general.

Anyway, I'd be very interested to know if 2011 gets around the need for that, etc.

The upgrade to 2011 appears to have WORKED! The game loads and I was able to run a tutorial.

Thanks for the suggestion/info. Keith and thanks to Kaspersky for solving the known problem with Unity.

Odyvek...thanks for the info., as well, even if I got it running with the 2011 update.  You may want to spread the word in the impulse/steam forums!

Well update within the game worked perfectly well for me. Once i was able to launch the game :) . It downloaded, quit the game started the separate autoupdater program, updated and relaunched AI War all without a hitch.
Regardless i agree this is only a workaround. I was on the verge of giving up hope, methodically disabling each option in settings.dat and seeing if it has any effect was the last thing i was going to try before giving up... I'm glad it worked hehe

Oh and great news Jarhead i will download the 2011 Kaspersky as well then.
