Savegame starts freezing

So after multitude of hours spent into a game it has somehow degenerated into a state where it keeps freezing up in short intervals. I sent the save to my friend who loaded it in singleplayer and he experienced the same freezes.

We played a Fallen Spire campaign to conclusion earlier that lasted longer than this one and did not encounter the same problem.
