The interesting thing for me is that avast has had no issues with any other unity game I have.  Kerbal and many others run flawlessly.  So...may be avast is just being picky.  I will see what the update offers, but yeah some times it works, some times it does not...for what ever reason.

Autoupdate check is off.

Ok, interesting tidbit.  I am getting three distinct crashes, and after the third, the game will run...once.

First Crash:
Fatal Error in GC
DuplicateHandle failed

Second Crash:
Breakpoint Exception: Breakpoint has been reached.  Same error as is OP.

Third Crash:
Nothing...no notice...just a CTD and that is that.

After CTD, the game will start once...then it begins again for a while.  All three logs from the will be added.  It is odd because if I rapid fire the launches, I get those three crashes...but after a couple starts...it starts.  Hope this is helping.

We don't get email notifications of a post edit, so if you're trying to get our attention with new information then a new post is better than an edit, yes :)

On the three crashes and then it working... totally bizarre.  I've seen some/all of those error types individually, but it not being consistent about them is new to me.

If there is anything I could run, or may be a debug version that would give you more insight into what is happening I would be open to running it.  I know stuff happens and things on my system may not be as clear.  So if I can help in some added way I would be very happy to.

Okay, so basically AVAST is being a complete jerk and doesn't stop killing AI War until AVAST is uninstalled, according to the other guy: http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=15650

I've heard tell of this sort of thing with other games of both ours, and other developers.  AVAST lately isn't listening to folder exclusions OR being fully disabled, which are definitely kind of notable bugs in an antivirus.

I'm honestly not sure why AVAST is now picking on AI War when it was not previously, but it seems to be something related to simply being on the newer version of the unity engine, which isn't something we can really do anything about.

If you are feeling experimental, you might try uninstalling AVAST to make absolutely sure that's what the crashing is being caused by, but we and other developers have seen this before.  AVAST has gotten a number of complaints about that in some of their forums IIRC, and I haven't seen any movement on that issue. :/

MSE is a relatively quick to install/free antivirus if you don't want to leave it with nothing if you decide to be experimental.

Maybe AVAST has heard of the AI, and is attempting to defend humanity.

Well as one report has put forward, antivirus tools are becomming less relevant due to the number of critters released each day.  Kind of funny really...we have viruses and root kits that infect the systems...why has no applied the same philosophy to cures...an antibody package that spreads across networks killing the bugs with out having to install bulky, bug riddled, and iffy tools.

Looks like it was Avast...well that sucks.  Eah may be I will just pony up the $50 to MalwareBytes and be done with it.  They have never steered me wrong at least.  Thanks for the help and I look forward to enjoying your game.

As a question, do you guys entertaining thoughts for games?  Like something for a new property?  I do like space games and am a graphic artist with a degree in Game Design.  Sadly it took me no where (stay at home father), but that does not stop me from thinking.

Sorry to hear about Avast -- they have indeed really been on a roll lately with mucking with other programs for some reason. :/

Generally speaking not, although often people bring up things and we discuss them (typically in the Game Design or Off Topic forums).  We do take suggestions on additions for our existing games _quite_ frequently, though.  A lot of the expansion ideas for AI War ships and features and whatnot came from players, who were credited for them in the release notes.  And a lot of the features and whatnot in the games themselves, once we get to at least beta status.

But in terms of overall core entire ideas for games outright, the only time one of those has come from someone other than myself (with key assistance from other staff) is Tidalis, and that was from my good friend Lars Bull, another game designer.  That was a fun experience, but generally speaking I have to be really passionate about a project before I start investing hundreds of thousands of dollars into making it -- each one is a big risk, and even our cheapest games took tens of thousands to make.

I keep a document of game ideas that are possibilities for future titles, and there are several dozen on there right now, with more being added each year than we take off of it, heh.  So really, core game concepts are not in short supply, it's a matter of picking the ones that I can visualize the clearest and that I'm most interested in and that seem like they would have the most market potential.

But once a game is in motion and has found an identity, then I am all about collaboration in terms of helping to refine that and make it far better than I could have just by myself.

Yeah thoughts (Prefer to say thoughts...Ideas in my mind has a sense of mental attachment, a "good idea" is something people have died over) are a dime a dozen much of the time and you never know how they will play out until they are prototyped.  I have been a fan os space games for many years ever since I first saw Homeworld and said in my head "Holy Shit...F'n finally".

Any way if you would entertain a private discussion at some point I would not mind a different perspective from what is in my head.  I still have a book to edit (Table Top RPG) and I see no need to air the laundry in public right now.

I was able to start the game after adding the entire directory (Program Files->AI War) to the exclusions list. You can find this via Avast tools-> scroll all the way down.

But yes, there is no excuse for the game still crashing while the shields are disabled.

Awesome, thank you for the tip on that with the entire-directory exclusion!  Very good to know.
