cant connect
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:14:31 am »
Hi,
a friend and i have a big problem in the latest beta.
He is hosting the game and i connect, via hamachi, it worked for about 2 years now without any big problems, but since the latest betas we can connect then we have "waiting for players"
after 5-10 secs it works but after 5 secs or so its there again and when i tab out the game its there again(but not necessarily).
And sometimes it works without any problems, thats strange :/.
Could you please have a look at the save:

There's definitely nothing new in the latest betas that should be causing this.  If you're worried about the save, you might try starting a new campaign and see if that helps.

Most likely what it is is a bad connection on Hamachi; if the little light next to either of your names in Hamachi is yellow instead of green, then you're being routed through the Hamachi servers and that will absolutely tank the performance.

Hope that helps!

hi we have the problem even with a new save, and in hamachi we have a green light and a 120 ping, so that should work as always.

Any new firewalls, antivirus updates, etc?

We've changed literally nothing remotely relevant to multiplayer in the latest versions, and other folks are playing multiplayer on the latest beta with no problem, so I don't think it's a bug.  You could look in the RuntimeData folder and see if there are any logs there as one idea, though; if it was a bug it should be showing up there.

Anyway, given that nothing that should be of substance to this issue has changed on our end and others aren't having the problem, my guess is that something changed on one of your software, hardware, OS, network, ISP, or similar.  Given you're using Hamachi and have a green light, that narrows it down pretty much to software, hardware, or OS.

The only thing of note in there is this line, which occurs a lot:

Quote
Skipped rendering frame because GfxDevice is in invalid state (device lost)

That could even just be from your having alt-tabbed out and the game not being active at the time, and not really an error.  This isn't really the log I mean, though; this is the unity log.  There are other logs that get put in the RuntimeData folder, not the AIWar_Data folder, and they tend to be more verbose.

When were you last playing the game?  Was it the 29th?  If so, then you're not having a network issue at all, what you're having is just a regular crash.  If you've got regular errors, then you can't keep playing in general with any success.  The Planet.GetPlanetSummary is some sort of bug that we'll need to find, although there's also one in Game.DrawGame.  So it's possible that there's something odd going on.  Let me fire up that save...

Okay, loaded up the save -- everything seems fine, and it's running as expected.

Are there some steps you have for duplicating the errors you were getting?  Alternatively, it might be that something is a bit amiss with your version of the game; you might try reinstalling the 5.0 installer into the same folder you already have, and then re-download the betas, and see if that helps.

But more likely, it's probably some sort of bug that is only triggered when some specific action is taken in this save.  If you have the steps to cause that, I can look at it.

But remember, these were from the 29th, anyway; if your errors were on the 31st, then these are unrelated.

when i recall it correctly we played the game yesterday, we had i think to times something like "unhandelt exeption on the top right" (but not yesterday, yesterday we just couldn't connect to each other...) at my game and the host, but actually were just trying to play :D but thats a problem at the moment, sometimes it just works and then its just fucked up with the connecting, can i ask you one thing? maybe it helps when i connect to him it gets to lets say 29% then i need to wait 1 min and then he loads throe after he loaded it works for 5 sec and then it says "waiting for players"
after some while it leaves and maybe comes back or it stays.
i will reinstall the game now and when that wont help maybe we can open a game and you can join him and you can have a look but he is sleeping at the moment tried to be up all night...
Now i have to wait until he is awake that could be in 2 hours and then he needs to go to work...
shit :(

If it's intermittent during connection, it really sounds like something has changed on the network (ie router firmware, ISP, or network drivers).  If you're having trouble, one thing you can both do is make sure you are each on the latest router firmware and network drivers for your computers.  The next thing you can do is adjust the network sync size, as described here: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,3820.msg70390.html#msg70390

I don't generally connect to others' games, but the above should give you some new things to try.  If one of you is on wireless, too, then it's possible that there's a new source of interference in the area.  Try playing on wired, or again adjusting the network sync size on the host.

If it's intermittent like this, and no errors, are logged, then that basically means that it's very likely not a bug in the game, and it's also definitely not any sort of firewall -- hardware or software.  It sounds like one of the above issues.

Hope that helps!

Okay, glad that fixed the error!

In terms of the crash, those aren't the actual error logs I need.  I need the UnhandledExceptions.txt file from the RuntimeData folder on the computer that crashed to have any hope of doing it.  And really what I most need is a save with steps to reproduce, because even UnhandledExceptions.txt isn't going to have line numbers; so while it will give me a general idea of a place to look, it's not very specific.  Since this version has been out for 9 months now and you guys are the first with a crash in it (if it's 5.000), then it must be something really obscure.  Even if it's something in the latest beta, nobody else has reported it so it must be something really specific to the campaign in question.  Still a bug -- but tricky to find if it's that rare and not reproducible.  :-\
