Keys going crazy
« on: April 18, 2011, 09:16:37 pm »
Hi, I left a bug thing about this, but it's more extensive apparently. Whenever I start a game, if I immediately try to use the Shift key to place engineers, the game will place five engineers at a time. Then today, I had just started a game, sent out a bunch of scouts and then hit Tab to see what they found. I then went back to my home planet, made a bunch of ships, hit Tab again and nothing happened. Tried it several times and nothing happened. Had to quit the game because I couldn't see the galaxy tab. Another key combination didn't work either at that point but I forgot what it was.

Any assistance? The game is fun but not when the keys don't work.

Thanks.

What OS is this on?  Version of the game?  It sounds like you might have a bad install --  we've got a tens of thousands of copies out there, and I don't have a single other report of this, so it makes me think there's either something messed up with the install of AI War, or else maybe some unusual hardware or software you have?

We have players on a variety of keyboards (German, US, etc), but maybe it's something specific?  I know that sometimes my wireless keyboard loses connection in general, and can't give any more commands in windows in general -- but presumably you would have seen that.

I hate to say I don't know, but I can't duplicate it and I don't have any other reports...  :-\

Sorry! It's Windows 7 64 bit. Impulse version. I just downloaded the latest beta. I have a Logitech keyboard that is plugged in, no wireless. OK, I'll uninstall and re-install, thanks.

Thanks for the added details.

Hopefully that reinstall helps -- if not, you might try making sure there is nothing else stealing focus from the game in the background.  It occurs to me that if you have antivirus or a firewall popping up a message, some of them are rude enough that they steal keyboard or mouse focus or both.  Could be something along those lines.  You might try temporarily playing in windowed mode and seeing what gives in that sort of situation, for one.

The engine we use is the Unity 3D engine, which is pretty widespread.  So again that is making me think either bad install (fingers crossed) or something else getting in the way of the game, which is really rare but does happen.

Hope that helps!

That helped. I opened the game (haven't had a chance to really get into it yet) and placed two engineers just fine. Thanks for the suggestion, I should have thought of it myself.

Glad that's all it was!  Though it's still really odd, but hey, whatever works. :)

Very, very rarely I'll end up being able to input commands into the game, but not be able to type anything if I'm trying to save the game for example.  Other than that, again very very rarely I end up having the "Shift" key stuck at the beginning of the game when it starts, but pressing the shift key again will make that go away.

The first one I think has more to do with running other programs simultaneously and switching between them frequently.  Rebooting the game worked IIRC, but it's happened once or twice at most.
